A paramedic was left unconscious and in need of emergency surgery after being trampled by a horse in Columbia County, New York, on Tuesday.

Ayere McAlice was found by a neighbour after being run over by one of her own horses in a horrific accident on Tuesday evening. The emergency services were called and the injured woman was rushed to hospital where she remains waiting for emergency back surgery.

When Philmont Fire and Greenport Rescue attended the shocking scene, they came to the realisation that their patient was a fellow paramedic and emergency medical technician for Greenport Rescue who had worked alongside them for the past decade.

“Yesterday Philmont Fire and Greenport Rescue handled an accident that hit close to home,” Columbia County Fire-Rescue Incidents wrote on Facebook their Facebook page.

“As responders converged to the scene they came to the realization that it was one of our own! Ayere McAlice is a Paramedic for Greenport Rescue and NDP EMS serving Columbia County and surrounding areas for the past 10 years.”

“Ayere received extensive injuries after being run over by her horse. Ayere is currently in Albany Medical Center awaiting surgery for her injuries,” they continued.

They went on to describe McAlice as “one of the nicest and most genuine human beings,” before linking to a GoFundMe page which has been set up to help her cover the cost of her medical bills.

“Ayere has spent the past 10 years helping others, it’s our time now to help Ayere! Please donate and share if you can!,” they wrote.

The fundraising page, which has already received 260 donations and surpassed its target of $25,000 (£19,839), also depicted McAlice as a selfless woman who dedicated her life to helping others. The fundraiser asked for people to give McAlice financial support considering she will probably not be able to return to work for the foreseeable future.

“She has dedicated her life to helping her friends and neighbors in their time of need,” friend Conor O’Neill wrote.

“Ayere will most likely be out of work for some time, and as we all know medical bills are far from affordable. We are asking the community that Ayere has helped for all these years to show her a little help in her time of need,” he continued.

The risk of suffering a serious injury from horse riding is greater than for other potentially risky sporting activities such as football, motor racing or skiing, according to The BMJ.

Last month, a jockey was left fighting for his life after suffering multiple injuries in a horrific race fall in Canada. Zack Ziegler’s horse fell on top of him and stepped on the back of his neck in the awful accident which left him in ICU.
