Fans of Lee Mack’s quiz series The 1% Club have been left in the dark by a question which even confused the show’s contestants, who were unable to answer it correctly. The show tests 100 people’s common sense and logic, with the rounds seeing how many of the hundred questions are correct.

According to ITV ’s synopsis, the series is a “Quiz show where contestants try to answer a question that only 1% of the country can get right”. If they make it through the rounds, the contestants could walk away with £100,000.

The comedian, 55, gave the show’s finalist 30 seconds to answer the question - “what is the first number that when spelled out has its letters in alphabetical order?”. Elliot, the finalist, answered with “four”, but was left disappointed as it was revealed that the correct answer was actually forty.

Fans of the show took to TikTok to explain their confusion at the answer, questioning how 40 is spelled, and discovering whether there is another number which is spelled alphabetically. One person asked: “How did people get to 40... I was still working out THREE.”

Others asked how “forty” could be the correct spelling of the number, when “four” contains a “U”. “Isn't it spelled fourty?”, one TikTok user asked.

Someone else had the same sentiment, asking: “Since when is forty spelled without a u? You know... as in four?” However, "forty" is not spelt with a "u", though spellings of the word containing the additional vowel did appear centuries ago in Middle English texts. Yet, the spelling of “fourteen” actually does inherit the “U” from “four”.

But there was also a number of people who suggested that eight could be the correct answer to the question. One person commented on the social media site: “It’s eight! They made a mistake.”

Another agreed, writing: “Why not eight? Comes before forty.” But since “G” comes before “I”, eight is not the correct answer, meaning another person wrote: “Please tell me how people are getting eight. I'm genuinely concerned”.

Season two of The 1% Club returned to ITV1 on 15 April 2023, but you can catch up on both seasons on ITVX now.
