Sophie Wessex breaks royal protocol with striking beauty look at major event

When it comes to her style, Sophie - now the Duchess of Edinburgh - has often shown a lot of versatility. While she often opts for smart looks for many of her royal engagements, she has shown herself to be just as comfortable in couture and much more casual styles.

A recent style choice that Sophie made wasn't something that members of the Royal Family are seen donning regularly, leading to questions over whether she had broken with what is commonly referred to as 'royal protocol' however, it isn't the first time that she has opted for the look, and other royal women have also been seen wearing it over the years.

During the recent state visit of the President of the Republic of Korea, Sophie was pictured with an eye-catching coral pink manicure, which Hello magazine reported as the Duchess breaking with royal protocol.

Sophie was seen sporting the bright pink nails twice during the visit. At the State Banquet at Buckingham Palace to mark the visit, she wore a custom Suzannah Crabb dress in cream, which featured bishop sleeves and an embroidered lace panel at the neckline that she paired with an aquamarine tiara that made the colourful nails really pop.

The following day she attended a roundtable discussion at the Royal Society that examined the ways the role of science can be used collectively to advance humanity. For this occasion, she chose a smart blue dress cut from velvet and paired it with gold jewellery and a navy handbag. Once again her bright manicure complemented the look and stood out against the other hues.

This is by no means the first time people have seen Sophie wearing brightly painted nails. In March 2022, Sophie sported a classic bright red manicure during a visit to New York, and last June during an engagement she got on board with the summer's biggest trend when she was seen wearing Barbie pink nails at an open farming day.

The late Queen may have preferred a nude or understated manicure, but both the Duchess of Sussex and the Princess of Wales have also previously gone for attention-grabbing nails. Last Easter, Kate went for bold red nails for the annual church service the royals attend, and back in 2018, Meghan chose dramatic dark nails to go with her black velvet dress at the British Fashion Awards.
