Man CIty host Liverpool in their first meeting of the season on Saturday afternoon, with the Premier League's top two facing each other with just a point separating them.

Both sides have won three of their last four matches in the league to occupy the top two positions as the league begins its hectic winter schedule. A single point separates the two, with English football's most intense rivalry of recent years set for another memorable encounter.

Having slipped below their high standards last season, Liverpool have roared back into title contention this term and will be keen to avoid a repeat of their 4-1 defeat at the Etihad Stadium back in April. That match was part of a season where Jurgen Klopp's side finished outside of the league's top four, but this season they look strong contenders to challenge for honours once again.

The Reds have set aside their defensive issues of last season and have looked strong this term, conceding just ten league goals to become the best defence in the league, alongside Arsenal. Meanwhile, as expected, City are the top scorers in the division with 32 goals and will be reliant on their fearsome attacking duo of Julian Alvarez and Erling Haaland to break down Liverpool's backline.

Just three points separate City at the top of the league with Aston Villa in fifth, meaning that defeat for either side could see them slip out of the top four. With stakes as high as they are, it is an early chance to lay down a marker in the title race and you won't want to miss a second of the action.

Team news

The international break has been a tough one for Pep Guardiola, with the City boss having to sweat over the fitness of key players Erling Haaland and Ederson. The former picked up an ankle knock ahead of Norway's 3-3 Euro qualifying draw against Scotland, missing out on that match and he may also be missing this weekend, meanwhile, Ederson sat out of international duty for Brazil following an injury suffered during the 4-4 draw against Chelsea.

John Stones also missed out on England duty due to a muscular injury, but he will be in line for a return this weekends as doubts remain over the fitness of Nathan Ake, who also was not present for the Netherlands. In midfield, Matheus Nunes remains a doubt having been delacred unfit for Portugal while Mateo Kovacic is also out of action; they join long-term absentee Kevin de Bruyne on the treatment table.

For Liverpool, they could welcome back three players, with Ibrahima Konate, Curtis Jones and Ryan Gravenberch all lining up returns following minor setbacks. They continue to deal with the absences of the experienced pair of Andy Robertson and Thiago Alcantara, who are both likely to stay on the sidelines until January 2024.
