Coronation Street fans in disbelief over Audrey actress Sue Nicholls ‘real age’

Coronation Street fans have been left in shock and disbelief after learning the true age of veteran show actress Sue Nicholls.

The iconic soap star has been playing Audrey Roberts on the long-running ITV show since 1979 and has appeared in almost 3,300 episodes. The much-loved character is also mother to Gail Platt - who is played by 72-year-old soap star Helen Worth - and has seen some huge storylines over the years including being the target of serial killer son-in-law, Richard Hillman - who was played by Brian Capron.

But while viewers have been happily watching Sue on their screens for decades, it seems many have failed to question how old she is in real life. And while it is, of course, unbecoming to ask a woman her age, it seems bosses at ITV have no qualms about broadcasting the age of a TV star for all the world to see.

Taking to social media on Thursday, show bosses took the opportunity to wish Sue a very happy birthday. And they highlighted that it was a particularly special year for the Audrey Roberts actress - as she reached one of life’s landmark ages.

Bosses shared a series of snaps of the actress from across the decades to mark her birthday, uploading behind-the-scenes images as well as snaps of her on screen. And they shared the details with the celebratory caption: "Happy 80th Birthday to the wonderful Sue Nicholls! Lots of love from everyone at Coronation Street."

Many fans reacted to the post to join in the celebration, sending warm wishes - and plenty of compliments - towards the octogenarian. One fan tweeted: "Happy birthday Sue! Looking as beautiful as ever!"

Another exclaimed: "Classy lady! Classy actor! Still in awe when I get to chat with her… Happy Birthday oh fabulous Sue!!!" And a further soap fan gushed: "Happy birthday Sue you literally are amazing you're such an icon. Have a good day."

Coronation Street fans have previously shared their shock over the fact that Sue is only seven and a half years older than her on-screen daughter, played by Helen Worth. Fans on Twitter commented on the age gap in 2022, with one writing: "It's weird to think that Sue Nicholls is only 7 years older than Helen Worth but they can get away with being mother and daughter."

And another wrote: “My favourite fact of the day: there is only seven and three quarters years age difference between Helen Worth (who plays the iconic Gail Platt) and Sue Nicholls, who plays her mother, Audrey Roberts.”

While other soap fans remarked that both women looked years younger than their age. One wrote on Twitter: “I thought Gail was only in her early 60s." And another typed: "Wow. I didn't realise Helen Worth was that age. She looks easy 10 years younger."
