It’s Thanksgiving Day, and across the country Americans are tucking into succulent turkey roasts to celebrate their loved ones.

Except for one son who has been tragically banned from his Thanksgiving dinner by one of his parents - and is stuck eating a sandwich instead. In a devastating tale of deceit, delicious cheeses, and a lack of self-control, here’s how one 16-year-old has found himself munching on a cheap sandwich for Thanksgiving - as his family devours their roast.

A cheese-lover’s nightmare

The long wait to sit down for your Thanksgiving meal can be difficult, as the family of reddit user ‘Weak_Sherbert426’ understand all too well. That’s why they have taken on a tradition of eating a charcuterie board before their meal at 6. “Just something everyone can pick at so they aren’t dying of hunger by dinner time,” explains Sherbert. Sounds reasonable.

But the seductive nature of a charcuterie board’s ingredients can be a recipe for problems - as they sit in the fridge for hours and maybe days but aren’t allowed to be touched. And this is particularly difficult for Sherbert’s poor son, 16.

“My son loves cheese,” says Sherbert on the ‘AmITheA**Hole’ reddit page. “Due to this I make sure to label when he can’t eat something. I labelled all the stuff for thanksgiving: ‘don’t eat’.” But for her cheese-adoring son such an order is not as easy to follow as it should be.

The crime

Unfortunately, he struck. Unable to resist the array of expensive cheeses at his disposal Sherbert’s son dug into the cheese - and is today suffering the tragic consequences of his decision.

“Well yesterday he went and ate all of the fancy meats and basically ate from each block that I bought,” said Sherbert. The parent was “truly pissed” at her son after having “worked extra hours” to afford it. “The prices are awful now for a nice cheese,” Sherbert added. Amen to that.

This is when things became tense among the family, as Sherbert simply wasn’t going to let the heinous crime go without punishment. “I told him he needs to go to the store to replace all of it which would cost him around 70 dollars (one of the cheeses he ate was 18 dollars) or he doesn’t get to eat thanksgiving meal,” she said. Ouch.

The fallout

With that bombshell dropped, it became clear to the Sherbert family that this would be no normal Thanksgiving. But Sherbert’s son, adamant that he is entitled to a bite of untouched cheese, is refusing to pay - and now the family is being torn apart.

“He is refusing to pay for it back, so no thanksgiving meal (he will eat a sandwich) and he thinks I am being a horrible jerk. My husband is on his side and doesn’t understand why I am so pissed about it,” Sherbert explained, bemused as to how her family doesn't understand her anger.

Unable to get her husband onside, Sherbert craftily went for the mother-in-law instead. “I made up my mind,” she began in an edit posted after the original post. “I already informed my mother-in-law of the situation. She offered to bring a nice cheese board if he still refuses.”

And Sherbert issued a final ultimatum to her son. “I am giving him one last chance, he can buy it, not get thanksgiving tomorrow or work for 11 hours to make up the money ( I liked that idea from a Redditor). I have a feeling he won’t do either of the options given so probably no thanksgiving and my relatives will understand.”

Sherbert’s story ends on a cliffhanger and we may never know whether the son made amends for his cheesy flaws. But the Reddit community stood largely in support of Sherbert’s actions, largely concluding she is NTA (not the a**hole).

“NTA: You gave him directions and instructions on what he couldn't do, he said 'Nah, Ima do it'. Stand your ground, kids need to learn consequences. Good on you,” said Unfair-Arachnid-1794. “He should have to pay for the cheese. Period. Not letting him eat the meal is a bit overboard, but you insisting he pay is on the ball.”

“NTA,” agreed Little-Employment-91. “That's a solid consequence for his actions. And he will tell the story for the rest of his life about how he learned not to mess with his mom when she tells him what not to eat. I mean, you put in extra hours at work.”

One reddit user was particularly incensed by the situation, accusing Sherbert’s husband of raising an “entitled brat”. They said: “NTA. Tell your husband to stop raising an entitled brat. There is no way your husband should be on your son side. You labelled everything do not eat your son knew exactly what it was for and decided to say f*ck you I’m gonna eat this anyway.

“Now he’s saying f*ck you again because there’s no way Mom will go through with her threat and I don’t get dinner for Thanksgiving so I’m just gonna refuse to do anything and once again have no consequences for my action.”

For the sake of the Thanksgiving spirit, let's hope the young man was allowed to eat with his family. We are all flawed and susceptible to temptation - especially when expensive cheese is in the mix.
