The Royal Family broke with tradition to allow Meghan Markle to join them for Christmas - but it did not go to plan.

Of course, Christmas at Sandringham with the Royal Family might not be on the cards for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle this year. But the couple did spend the festive season together with the rest of the Firm on the Norfolk estate in the early days of their romance.

In fact, the late Queen even allowed Meghan to join fiance Harry for Christmas in 2017 before the couple married, meaning she wasn't an official royal. No doubt the now Duchess of Sussex would have been eager to make a good impression with her future in-laws, but it seems she made a faux pas when it came to one royal - despite thinking her encounter with them had gone well.

In the couple's explosive Netflix series, Meghan lifted the lid on her first royal Christmas, which was spent with the likes of the late Queen and Prince Philip and her in-laws, the Prince and Princess of Wales.

She told how she snuck off to call her mum to tell her how amazing the royal celebrations were and revealed a cringeworthy moment with her husband-to-be's grandfather, the late Duke of Edinburgh. Meghan recalled: "I remember so vividly the first Christmas at Sandringham. Calling my mum, and she's like, 'How's it going?'. And I said, 'Oh my gosh, it's amazing'. It's just like a big family like I always wanted. And there was just this constant movement and energy and fun."

She then revealed how she sat next to Prince Philip, "H's grandfather", at dinner, saying: "And I just thought it was so wonderful. And I was like, 'Oh, we chatted and it was so great. And I talked about this and talked about this. He [Prince Harry] was like, 'You had his bad ear. He couldn't hear anything you were saying.' I was like 'Oh... well, I thought it went really well!'"

It's unclear exactly what Harry and Meghan's Christmas plans with their children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet are this year. However, sources have claimed that Harry and Meghan would accept an invitation to spend the festive period with the rest of the Royal Family at Sandringham this year. It comes as relations have seemingly begun to thaw between the Duke of Sussex and the King after they shared a 'warm' phone call last week.

However, if an invitation was given to the Sussexes and their children and they accepted, this would pose a problem for Prince William, who is said to have a non-existent relationship with his younger brother, alleging prompting chatter that if this were to happen - William, wife Kate and their children would spend Christmas with the Middleton family.

However, a royal insider told the Daily Mail there is one way that the King could see both of his sons over the festive period. They said rather than invite Harry and Meghan to Sandringham, Charles could ask them to visit him in Scotland over New Year when William, Kate and their family would be at their country retreat of Anmer Hall in Norfolk.

The source said: "'It would certainly have the advantage of killing two birds with one stone; extending an olive branch to one son without causing difficulty to the other."

Meanwhile, another source also poured cold water on Harry and Meghan visiting for Christmas but said a New Year visit would be more likely. They explained: "Christmas plans are normally nailed down by now as Sandringham isn't a particularly big place and there's not a lot of room for the entire extended family. It would be surprising for the Sussexes not to have received an invitation by now if there was going to be one. New Year in Scotland would be more likely. But as with anything to do with Harry and Meghan, let's face it, anything can happen."
