An elderly man was left heartbroken after allegedly finding his girlfriend in bed with the handyman.

Charles Sarno, 84, said he was fixing his girlfriend's home so she could rent it out and get some income from it. One day, he went to the property and found the door open, with the car parked at the back of the home.

The US Navy veteran said he thought there were plumbers carrying out some repairs, however, when he walked in, he allegedly found the woman in bed with the man who was supposed to fix the house. Describing the moment he found out his partner, who he was due to marry next month, was actually cheating on him, the man said: "It killed me. It was like a knife in my heart that was torn apart."

Mr Sarno was so heartbroken that his granddaughter Anisa Kistler, 28, decided to launch an appeal on social media to find a "nice lady" for him. The sales worker coined the hashtag helpgrandaddyfindagirlfriend for her grandpa, who has been widowed since 2011.

The mum-of-four, who describes the elderly singleton as sweet, loving and mild-mannered, said she has received many messages from women who are interested in getting to know him. Mr Sarno, who likes cars and being active, was moved to tears by the outpouring of kind messages on her post, his granddaughter revealed.

Charles, from LaGrange, Georgia, said he had paid the man to fix his girlfriend's house and assumed he would be "working on the plumbing" - but when he found them in bed together, he was extremely upset. He explained: "It was very bad. She was gone for about a week. I happened to go back by her house. I was getting it fixed up for her so she could rent it out and have some income.

"I got there and the car was parked behind the house so you couldn't see it. The door was open. I walked in and thought maybe they were working on the plumbing. And I found them in bed. She's with him and I'm paying this guy to fix the house.

"It killed me. It was like a knife in my heart that was torn apart. I was heartbroken. We were supposed to get married next month. It felt good to hear the comments, like somebody might have cared.

"I don't want one [a lady] that's ready for the nursing home. I'm alright. Everything works and I have wants and needs. I'm not dead. They say that's the only way. Love can break a heart and love can mend it."

Anisa said: "I told him that I was going to help him find a nice lady. I did it because I was upset about the situation. He's been heartbroken and very very upset about it. That's why I looked for someone else because there are really nice women out there.

"You're not too old and you can still find someone that will want to be with you and you can both love each other. You just have to look for the right kind of person. I would like him to be with someone nice and who wants to be with him because they like him.

"Anybody that makes him happy but for the right reasons would make me happy. I got at least 50 to 100 messages. Some people messaged me for their grandparents. Some people messaged me for their mum and some people messaged me for them.

"I got a little overwhelmed because I had a dating pool of women in my inbox. I didn't know which ones he was going to like. I talked to as many as I could. I gave them a way to communicate with my grandaddy as long as they seemed nice.

"There were a few ladies that just seemed so sweet and outgoing. I thought I would love for you to be my grandma. He got very emotional and he was upset and just very down that day. I was very worried about him.

"I said, 'Grandaddy, all these people love you.' I read him all of it and showed him all the messages and how many people cared about him. He broke down crying. It reminded him that he is loved and people do care about him because he felt very lonely. It might have made his head a little bit bigger."

Anisa says Charles was heartbroken after the death of her grandma in 2011 and soon became lonely. Despite her gramps finding love again, Anisa admits she was never a big fan of his new woman as she believed she wasn't with him for the right reasons.

Anisa said: "It was an awful heartbreak for him. He got lonely and he met a lady. He really liked her but unfortunately, I don't think she was dating him for the right reasons."

She added her grandad has spoken with four women over the phone since she made her post and says he has even made plans to go for coffee with two of them - along with his dog Jumper who goes everywhere with him. In a post with more than 600 reactions, 565 shares and 270 comments, Anisa wrote: "Now taking applications from your grandmas to date my grandaddy!

"He's lonely, the 'lady' he's been dating on and off for two years cheated on him and has been using him for years and better avoid me if she has any sense. He's got a heart of gold. He's a veteran, he's kind, he is stable, and he just wants to be with someone who is a good person. He's active and likes to travel and do things so it's important that whoever he is with loves to get out and explore!"

One Facebook user replied: "I nominate my Grammy! She's very nice and loves motorcycles!" Another said: "He's such a handsome man [heart eye emoji]. I really hope you find him someone who deserves to be loved by him and will love him just as much [heart emoji]. I love this [heart emoji] please keep updating the post so we can know when he finds his person." Another added: "Bless it. He's a cutie! I hope he finds love again! [heart emoji]"
