Wales' hopes of reaching Euro 2024 were put on hold on Tuesday, as they failed to beat Turkey in their final qualifier in Cardiff.

Wales, who reached the semi-finals of Euro 2016, needed to win and hope that Croatia failed to do the same against Armenia in Zagreb. Rob Page's side took the lead through Neco Williams in the seventh minute but were thwarted by Yusuf Yazici's penalty.

"It's hard to take," said Wales captain Ben Davies at full-time. "The one (penalty) they got, there wasn't a lot in it. But I can't say much on camera now. I think we need to keep the standards we showed tonight. We'll have to pick ourselves up and go again."

The result of Wales' game was ultimately irrelevant, as Croatia won 1-0 thanks to Ante Budimir's first-half goal. Wales will now need to qualify via the play-offs in March, with 12 teams set to compete for the remaining three tournament spots.

Germany automatically qualified for Euro 2024 as hosts. The first three teams to join them at the tournament were France, Belgium and Portugal, who all secured qualification on October 13. Another three nations - Scotland, Spain and Turkey - qualified two days later. Austria booked their spot on October 16 before England joined them a day later.

Then came November's internationals - the final chance for nations to automatically qualify for Euro 2024. Hungary, Slovakia, Albania, Denmark, Netherlands, Romania, Switzerland, Serbia, Italy, Czech Republic and Slovenia all got over the line.

That left just one automatic spot remaining for either Wales or Croatia to claim. Sadly for the Welsh, Luka Modric and his international teammates were the ones celebrating on Monday night. Yet there is still time for Page's players to reach Euro 2024.

To qualify, Wales will need to beat either Finland, Iceland or Ukraine in a semi-final. They will then need to beat the winners of Poland's semi-final with Estonia to book their spot at the tournament in Germany. If Wales lose either of those games, they are out.

Page's side will compete in Path A of the play-offs. They will find out whether they will face Finland, Iceland or Ukraine following a draw on Thursday. The other two teams will compete in Path B along with Israel and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Path C is much easier to understand. The winners of Georgia vs Luxembourg will face the winners of Greece vs Kazakhstan for a place in Euro 2024. All play-off games will be one-legged, with all 24 qualified nations confirmed by March 26.
