Deal or No Deal viewers were left fuming at the new format of the show.

The iconic gameshow returned for the first time since 2016 on Monday night with "a brand-new setting with brand-new prize boxes and a new batch of contestants". Catchphrase's Stephen Mulhern has taken over as host, replacing Noel Edmonds who was at the helm of the Channel 4 version of the show for 11 years.

Yet it is not just the set and presenter that has changed as part of the ITV reboot. Viewers branded the programme "disappointing" as they questioned why the prize fund has dropped by £150,000. In the original show, contestants competed for the chance to take home the top prize of £250,000.

However, the top prize is now £100,000. Fans took to social media to share their thoughts as one person said: "Didn’t it used to be £250,000 top prize? Seems disappointing to be trying to win a prize that’s less than half of what it used to be." Another added: "Wait has the prize money gone down from £250,000 to £100,000. #dealornodeal."

Someone else asked: "What happened to the 250k? #DealOrNoDeal." A fourth wrote: "Mulhern is doing a decent job but this really could do with the 250k jackpot returning especially as it's four weeks instead of all year round. If it rates well, hopefully it will be top prize for the next series."

Another fan commented: "The new #DealOrNoDeal is fine, but doesn't have the same feel of being perilous or life changing when there's no longer a £250,000 box on the ITV version. The offers are going to be much worse than Channel 4's." Someone replied: "100% agree… not a big difference between 75k and 100k … that jump to £250k was massive for the excitement of the game."

Noel Edmonds was the Deal or No Deal host right from the start in 2005, up until the game show was axed in 2016. Bosses decided to let the show go out on a high as a TV insider told the Mirror at the time: “ Deal Or No Deal doesn’t get the ratings it used to and it is not a cheap daytime show to make. Noel and ‘Deal’ had a great run but bosses have just decided it is the right time to end the series. The farewell tour will be a great way for fans to say goodbye to the show.”

The 'Farewell Tour’ took place when a dozen episodes were filmed around the UK at different locations. Over 2,900 episodes of the quiz had been screened by Channel 4. Channel 4’s Chief Creative Officer, Jay Hunt said: “I remember watching Deal or No Deal launch and watching it grow to become a hit that captivated audiences for over a decade.

"A lot of the credit for that must go to Noel and his exceptional presenting. As the studio shows ends, I’m delighted he’ll now be taking Deal or No Deal to the audience.” Sources close to Noel insisted he was not upset by the new deal and celebrated the new contract which reportedly netted him £10million.
