The corpse of a twisted paedophile branded the worst serial killer in the world is now stuck in a morgue as his family complains of being unable to mourn his death.

The body of Luis Alfredo Garavito, one of Colombia's most-feared child predators, was trapped at Legal Medicine for nearly 40 days after his death on October 12. His relatives claimed that despite having done everything they could to speed up his burial, his body had been rotting in a refrigerator for the past month, but online commentators have shown little sympathy for their complaint.

Facebook user 'Hector Avellaneda' wrote: "You can throw the body in the trash!" Another commenter, joyful over his death, added: "Cremation was better while he was still alive!" The family lawyer, Gabriel Alfonso Beltran, said Garavito's nephew provided all the documentation needed to prove they were related so they could take his body.

Despite them not having the money to cover all the costs, they expected to soon receive his ashes as their local mayor offered to pay all the funeral expenses. Still, the body of the killer, dubbed 'The Beast', remained at the morgue. Now, his family is claiming authorities are trying to sabotage his burial and deny them the basic human right to mourn Garavito.

After a series of setbacks, the cremation had been scheduled for November 18 but was later cancelled. But the Prosecutor's Office denied trying to sabotage the process and assured that the delay was due to "problems at the funeral home".

Silvio Cuello, a Valledupar city representative, said the rotting corpse could also become a biohazard. However, netizens were quick to say that Garavito did not even deserve a burial.

Prior to his death, Garavito was serving a 1,853-year prison sentence for the murder of 132 of his young victims. He was arrested on 22nd April 1999 and was kept in solitary at the La Tramacua prison for fear he would be killed by other inmates. In 1999, he admitted to raping and torturing children and teenagers and he was convicted of murdering 138 of them. He faced charges pertaining to 172 minors, but 32 of the cases remained under investigation. Based on maps of skeletons he has drawn during his prison time, the number of his victims could exceed 300, according to local media. His sentence was reduced to 22 years for collaboration and the prohibition of life imprisonment in Colombia. He would have become eligible for parole in 2023.
