Where Southgate's first 10 England debutants are now as Lewis to become latest

Rico Lewis is set to become the latest star to make their England debut under Gareth Southgate's management when the Three Lions face North Macedonia on Monday.

Lewis was a surprise late call-up to the senior squad as Southgate faced injury issues, particularly in defence. He has only made six starts for Manchester City in all competitions this season, but is expected to line up at left-back at the Toše Proeski Arena.

The 18-year-old will be one of the youngest players to make their debuts under Southgate since he took over as England boss in 2016. Here, Mirror Football looks at the first 10 players to be handed their first Three Lions caps by the manager.

Jesse Lingard

Southgate handed out a debut to Jesse Lingard in his very first game in charge - a 2-0 win over Malta. At the time, Lingard was impressing for Manchester United and also played a key role for England at the 2018 World Cup.

But things fell apart for the midfielder after that tournament, as he was dropped by United. After a long period out of the team, he was sent on loan to West Ham in 2021 and starred for the Hammers.

Any thoughts that might resurrect his career at Old Trafford though were quickly dashed and he joined Nottingham Forest last summer. But his time there ended after just one disappointing season and he remains a free agent, with his England career over after 31 caps.

West Ham star Aaron Cresswell was another to be handed his debut in Southgate's very first games in charge. The Hammers left-back was brought on as a substitute in the 2-2 draw with Spain in November 2016.

Unfortunately his time on the pitch in the game saw Spain score twice to level the game. He would be handed two more caps in 2017, though only started once, and has not been seen in the England set-up since.

Despite that, Cresswell has become one of the Premier League's most dependable left-backs. He has made more than 300 appearances for West Ham and helped them to win the Europa Conference League last season.

Michael Keane

At one time seen as being a future key player in England's defence, things have not quite worked out that way for Michael Keane. He was first called up in October 2016, but had to wait until an April 2017 friendly defeat to Germany to make his debut.

He featured sporadically for the Three Lions over the next three years, earning 11 more caps for the Three Lions. But he has not been called up since then, having struggled for regular game-time at Everton in recent seasons.

Nathan Redmond

Nathan Redmond was impressing for Southampton when Southgate called him up to the senior squad in May 2017. Though he had been a regular for the Three Lions at Under-21s level, that was not the same for his time in the senior side.

His only appearance came as a second-half cameo in a defeat to Germany in April 2017. He joined Besiktas in the summer of 2022, before returning to England to join Burnley ahead of this season.

James Ward-Prowse

James Ward-Prowse has developed into one of the Premier League's best midfielders since becoming the third player to make his England bow in that defeat to Germany in 2017. But he has struggled for opportunities since then.

Instead, Southgate has favoured Jordan Henderson, Declan Rice, Kalvin Phillips and Jude Bellingham, much to the frustration of supporters. Ward-Prowse continued to impress for Southampton despite their relegation last season.

His performances earned him a move to West Ham, where he has also starred. But he has still only been able to add 10 more games to his England career and missed out on selection to the World Cup 2022 squad.

Kieran Trippier

In took until June 2017 for Kieran Trippier to make his England debut, which is a surprise given the key role he now plays for Southgate. That first appearance came in a defeat to France when he was 27 years old.

The fullback has gone from strength to strength, making 46 appearances for the Three Lions in total. His most memorable moment came with a brilliant free-kick against Croatia to put England a goal up in a World Cup semi-final.

His club career has also been full of memorable moments, playing in a Champions League final with Tottenham, winning La Liga with Atletico Madrid and captaining Newcastle to a top four finish last season.

Harry Maguire

One of the most important players from the Southgate era has been Harry Maguire. He was playing for Leicester when he made his England debut in a narrow win over Lithuania in a World Cup qualifying in October 2017.

His performances for the Three Lions in part led to a record-breaking move to Manchester United. Despite his struggles at the Red Devils, Maguire has remained one of Southgate's key players and is rarely out of the starting line-up.

He started both the semi-final against Croatia in 2018 and the Euro 2020 final against Italy. The centre-back has been able to somewhat resurrect his career at United this season, despite being stripped of the captaincy.

Harry Winks

Harry Winks also started the win over Lithuania alongside Maguire, playing all 90 minutes. He made sporadic appearances for the Three Lions over the next four years as his career at Tottenham failed to really take off.

His last appearance for England came in 2020 and it looks unlikely he will ever be selected again. Having spent last season on loan at Sampdoria, Winks is now starring in Leicester City's promotion charge in the Championship.

Jordan Pickford

Jordan Pickford has emerged as Southgate's first-choice keeper since making his England debut in 2017. That coincided with his move from Sunderland to Everton and he has since become one of the Premier League's top shot-stoppers.

Pickford has continued to keep his England starting spot, despite challenges from the likes of Nick Pope and Aaron Ramsdale. He started every game at World Cup 2018, Euro 2018 and World Cup 2022.

Joe Gomez

There were high hopes for Joe Gomez as he made his way up the ranks for Liverpool. He made his debut in a 0-0 draw with Germany in 2017, before being named man of the match against Brazil the same year.

Though he missed out on selection for the 2018 World Cup, he continued to impress for his club. He played a key role in Liverpool's Premier League title win in 2020 but his career was derailed somewhat later that year.

He suffered an ACL injury while on duty for England to start an injury crisis at Anfield. Though he has regained his place for Liverpool, the 26-year-old has not played for the Three Lions since that devastating injury.
