Inside Shakira and Gerard Pique's messy split from Miami move to revenge song
It's hardly a surprise that after a sticky split, Shakira and Gerard Pique had to endure some tough times when it came to dividing their assets.
The Colombian singer, 46, and her footballer ex, 36, separated last summer and have been embroiled in a bitter spat ever since the cracks started to appear. It ended in courtroom row over the custody of their children and their £12m mansion and it seems we've not heard the end of the sniping yet.
It took a 12-hour marathon meeting with lawyers from either side to try and get to the bottom of it, the pair not actually meeting during the process but things dragged out before the settlement was reached, which including selling their incredible property in Barcelona. They also confirmed the arrangements for the sons Milan, 10, and Sasha, 8. She gained primary custody, and it wasn't her only big win.
The songstress described the break-up as the 'darkest period of her life' in the October edition of Elle magazine. They were an item for 12 years and the Hips Don't Lie hit maker took a while to address the matter publicly, struggling to get her head around the matter which totally changed her life.
"Oh, this is really hard to talk about personally, especially as this is the first time I’ve ever addressed this situation in an interview," she admitted to the outlet. "I’ve remained quiet and just tried to process it all," she added. "Um, and yeah, it’s hard to talk about it, especially because I’m still going through it."
Shakira's savage birthday present to ex Gerard Pique as split turns toxicShakira and the decorated sports star announced they had split in May 2022 following unconfirmed claims he was cheating on his long-term partner with a younger woman. Once they called it a day, Gerard moved on quickly after getting into a new relationship with 23-year-old PR student Clara Chia Marti. Gerard and Shakira first met when the footballer was on set of the video for the singer's official 2010 World Cup single 'Waka Waka' before starting a relationship later that year.
Gerard and and Clara, 23, have officially been together since October and Shakira was quick to reference the relationship in her new song called BZRP Music Sessions Vol 53. "I'm worth two 22's. You traded a Ferrari for a Twingo. You traded a Rolex for a Casio... A lot of gyms, but work your brain a little bit too," the Hips Don't Lie hitmaker sings in the savage track.
But the former footballer also benefited from his ex's revenge song, as he responded to those lyrics by persuading Casio to become sponsors of the Kings League. The former Barcelona player explained his sponsorship deal with Casio during an appearance on a live stream of the Kings League, saying: "We have an agreement with Casio," which was followed by laughter.
Pique added: "I'm serious... we have reached an agreement with Casio for the Kings [League], yes, because we have many countdowns and we have many watches... this watch is for life, I'm telling you!" Gerard then handed out free Casio watches to his guests, while Sergio Aguero chanted "Casio, Casio". The Manchester City legend then asked about Shakira's song, which led to more laughter.
The split was settled late last year and in a joint statement they said: "Our sole objective is to provide them with the utmost security and protection, and we trust that their privacy will be respected. We appreciate the interest shown and hope that the children can continue with their lives with the necessary privacy in a safe and calm environment."
The singer said goodbye to Spain and set off for her new life in Miami - nearly 5,000 miles away from her ex. But the divorce it didn't draw a line under things. Shakira appeared to hit out at him in a song she released called Monotonia with references to “narcissism” and his “cold as Christmas” attitude. “I won’t get back with you, not if you cry, not even if you beg me,” she sang in one of the record's most biting lines. “It’s clear that it’s not my fault if they criticizs you. I just make music, sorry if it splashes you.”
It seems like she's having the last laugh. The music video for Shakira's tune has wracked up an astonishing 133 million views in just five days on Bizarrap's YouTube channel. Furthermore, it has also been streamed more than 53 million times on Spotify. Due to interest, music experts say she cleared £3m within the first few weeks.
This summer following her breakup with Gerard, Shakira has been romantically tied to Lewis Hamilton, the British racing driver. The reported new lovebirds have been spotted in public together numerous times over the summer including on a romantic boat ride and dinner, at Silverstone during a racing tournament, and during the Spanish Grand Prix in June.
A brief statement, released by the singer’s communication agency, confirmed the pair’s split in June, saying: "We regret to confirm that we are parting ways. For the well-being of our children, who are our highest priority, we ask that you respect their privacy. Thank you for your understanding."
