Woman raped in Southampton cemetery as police launch major manhunt for attacker

A woman in her twenties has been raped in a cemetery as police launch a manhunt for her attacker.

A crew from the South Central Ambulance Service attended the scene alongside officers following a 999 call alerting them to the sexual assault in Southampton, Hampshire. A police cordon was put around the graveyard, reports state.

Forensic officers were also called to the scene as he woman was supported by specialist officers The attack happened this morning just before 7am. Detectives carried out door-to-door inquiries.

Hampshire Constabulary said in a statement: "Police were called at 6.44am this morning by the ambulance service, reporting that a woman aged in her 20s had been assaulted in the Cemetery Lane area of Southampton.

"The woman has reported to police that she was raped at this location in the early hours of the morning. Inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances. Police are currently at the scene and specialist officers are supporting the woman."
