Dana Carvey is taking a break from work and social media as he and his family grieve the death of his son, Dex.

Dex was reportedly found unresponsive and locked in a bathroom at his Los Angeles home on Thursday 15 November. Paramedics attended the property after his girlfriend called 911 at around 10pm.

Dana and his wife Paula released an emotional statement hours later, confirming their loss. It read: “Last night we suffered a terrible tragedy. Our beloved son, Dex, died of an accidental drug overdose. He was 32 years old. Dex packed a lot into those 32 years. He was extremely talented at so many things - music, art, film making, comedy - and pursued all of them passionately.

“Most of all, he loved his family, his friends and his girlfriend, Kaylee. Dex was a beautiful person. His handmade birthday cards are a treasure. We will miss him forever.”

Today, the couple followed up with another statement, to thank fans and to explain that Dana - who has voiced hit animation movies including Hotel Transylvania and The Secret Life Of Pets - will be stepping back from showbiz for an indefinite time.

The Instagram graphic read: "This is just to say thank you. My wife and I have been overwhelmed by your love, your personal stories, your compassion. We received so many beautiful messages from people who knew Dex. These touched us more than we could ever express in words.

"I will be taking a break from work and social media - trying to figure out what life looks like now we are a family of 3. We will heal he best we can and carry on. Our darling Dex would have wanted it that way. Much love, Dana."

Dex starred alongside his father in a range of shows, including The Funster and Beyond the Comics. Following in his father's footsteps again, he also opened Carvey's TV comedy special titled Straight White Male, 60, in 2016.

Dana posted a photo of the pair working together and the comments section was quick to fill up with messages of condolence. One person penned: "Love this picture, Dana. It tells so much. God bless you Dex."

Another then said: "So unbelievably sad for your loss. Dex was the best, and always a blast to talk to and riff with and had an amazing amount of energy and positivity."
