Olly Murs snubbed as The Voice co-stars 'rescue' him from embarrassing ordeal

Olly Murs was left feeling awkward after being 'snubbed' on Saturday night's instalment of The Voice UK.

His fellow ITV co-star coaches came to his rescue, sparking a debate among viewers about whether the hopeful had broken the rules with his audition. Despite being upset by the bosses' decision to drop him from the next series of the talent programme, Olly returned for the latest run of the long-running talent show.

He joined Will.I.Am, Tom Jones and Anne-Marie in the judges' chairs as they watched a new batch of hopefuls try to impress them. The Voice Blind Auditions rounds continued this weekend, with beatboxer Pete Box being one of the first acts to take the stage.

A big fan of 90s rock icon Nirvana, Pete quickly caught the attention of all the coaches with his performance. Olly was the first to hit his button to get a first look at Pete in action, but Pete ultimately chose to be on Team Will.

Olly couldn't resist the chance to duet with Pete, quickly jumping up from his seat and onto the stage to try and get Pete to join him in a rendition of his number 1 hit Heart Skips A Beat. However, Pete either didn't know the song or wasn't a fan, as he seemed to ignore Olly, while Will.I.Am joined them to ease the awkwardness, before Anne-Marie chimed in with a line from Sweet Female Attitude's dance anthem Flowers.

After Pete finally left the stage, an embarrassed Olly returned to his seat, thanking the others for stepping in to save him. Some viewers at home were left puzzled over how Pete's audition fitted The Voice's brief. One viewer asked on X: "Is this not called the voice?" Another echoed the sentiment, posting: "Someone needs to help the judges realise it's a singing competition. That was dreadful!" A third exclaimed: "IT'S A SINGING COMPETITION!!!"

It comes after Olly sobbed as he admitted he believes he "could have done more" for his late friend Caroline Flack. He turned his chair for contestant Sheridan Coldstream after the 59-year-old covered a Billie Eilish song about suicide. Listen Before I Go features the lyrics "Call my friends and tell them that I love them, and I'll miss them. Sorry." The former suicide helpline volunteer has also worked as a confidence coach, but Olly didn't realise until he turned his chair around.

Olly said: "Obviously, I lost a good friend to suicide a few years back…" He choked back tears as Anne-Marie rushed to support him, with Olly saying he felt like he was destined to meet Sheridan. The coach explained: "It's mad, actually, that you’ve walked into my life." He added: "Although I’m supposed to be coaching you, I think you’ll be coaching me." He left his chair to give Sheridan a hug.

Olly explained how the moment made him think he could have done more for Flack, who took her own life in February 2020 while she was due in court, charged with assaulting her boyfriend at the time, Lewis Burton. She was just 40 years old at the time, with the Be Kind campaign launched following her death.

"It hit me," Olly continued. "I think there’s a lot of stuff I haven’t dealt with that I need to talk about. Sheridan walked into my life and maybe I need that.’"
