Big Brother contestant Matty Simpson may have fallen at the last hurdle on the ITV reality show - but he says he was left ‘traumatised’ by events inside the house and was glad to be kicked out a day before the final.

Reality TV fans were delighted this year when ITV revived the long-running reality show five years after Channel 5 axed it from the schedules in 2018. Matty, 23, was one of the contestants to make it almost all the way to the end, but was dumped from the house on the penultimate night in a brutal twist.

The remaining housemates had received letters from home which they read to each other. Fellow contestant Yinrun Huang, 25, was tasked with reading Matty’s letter to him - only to find an additional message at the end of the note informing he had lost a public vote and was being evicted on the spot.

The brutal twist was handled well by Matty, who calmly accepted his fate and bid farewell to his housemates. But now the doctor from the Isle of Man has explained that he felt ready to leave the house after more than six weeks of emotional turmoil.

Opening up to the Daily Star, he said: “Everyone was expecting me to cry or to have a bit of a breakdown and everyone was shocked at my reaction. But I only think my reaction was so good because I was ready to go at that point. I didn’t come to win or be a celebrity and I was ready to go.”

An earlier twist saw the housemates inadvertently evict Tom Bryant, 21, Jenkin Edwards, 25, and eventual winner Jordan Sangha when they selected them for a challenge only for them to be told they were being evicted. The remaining housemates did not know the trio were then sent to a secret second room where they watched the main house while waiting for the public to vote for one of them to be saved - with 25-year-old Jordan being sent back into the house and granting him his path to victory.

The incident seemed to play heavily on Matty’s mind, as he said: “That final week was so tough on the emotions. When there was only five of us left, I just had the horrible feeling that I’d just evicted Tom with Yinrun in that challenge.

“So that anxiety and paranoia was really looming on me at that point. It was so savage the way that all three got fake evicted and I honestly just could not take any more twists and turns from Big Brother.”

He added: “I was finished, and I was kind of glad I went in a super savage, brutal way through the backdoor because it was iconic.” The 2023 season of Big Brother was ultimately won by Jordan - who walked away with the £100,000 on Friday night, and amused viewers when he declared: “I can pay my council tax!”

Voter statistics revealed that Jordan won the contest by a clear margin - securing a whopping 37.8 per cent of the public vote. His next nearest competition was from runner-up Olivia Young, 23, who secured 20.2 per cent of the vote - but even she was only 0.5 percent ahead of third-place star Henry Southan, 25.

Viewers, however, have vowed to boycott future seasons of the show after many felt that Yinrun should have won. The live audience cheered loudest for her and even chanted her name - however, she only secured 17.1 per cent of the vote, while fifth place star Noky Simbani scored 5.3 per cent of the vote.
