Big Brother 'bans Trish from final after racist and homophobic tweet scandal'

There will be a Trish Balusa shaped hole in the grand finale episode of Big Brother 2023 - as she has had her invite to the live final revoked in light of problematic tweets that resurfaced following her eviction last week.

The 33-year-old activist was a fan favourite on ITV’s revived version of the long-running reality show and was often shown as the most rational and considerate member of the house. However, following her shock eviction on day 35 of the competition, fans discovered old tweets sent by the fledgling reality star that showed her using homophobic and racist terminology.

Now it has been reported that Trish has effectively been banned from the live final of Big Brother 2023 following a backlash against her. However, she will still be featured on the show via archive footage as highlights from the past six weeks will be aired that includes her.

The Sun reports that mum-of-one Trish has had her invitation to join the finale celebrations revoked. A source told the publication: "Trish was keen to attend but production decided it was best if she didn't come and told her she was no longer invited. They didn't want to look like they were endorsing Trish's opinions, even though she has apologised for them, and they felt it was a distraction from the final.

"Trish was disappointed but she respects the show's wishes and will be there in spirit." The source went on to claim Trish will appear via "VT packages and will still very much be a part of the show" and that producers are not going to try to pretend that she was never part of the show.

Following her eviction a week prior, Trish went from being a national treasure to being the centre of a historic tweet scandal as old messages shared online returned to haunt her. Among old posts, the reality star had written messages that were deemed racist and homophobic.

One such tweet read: “I follow this anti Islamd page and I’m not gonna lie as funny as some posts are, I’m scared to retweet them.” And another read: “Asian. Don’t mind them, it’s the useless ones who complain.” And another message stated: “Today a lesbian was making a move on me at work, I don’t know how I feel about that.”

Following the uncovering of the messages, and subsequent backlash, Trish issued a sincere apology. She wrote online: "I'm aware that some very concerning old tweets of mine have resurfaced and I would like to sincerely apologise for the harmful stereotypes I perpetuated and the pain I have cause to the marginalised communities and groups of people mentioned. There are no excuses for the ignorance that I showed and I am deeply disappointed, embarrassed and ashamed that I once made such comments.

"I have come a very long way since by educating myself and being educated by others on the impact and harm these views cause. It is part of the reason why I am so passionate about standing up for others and holding myself to a high standard of responsibility and accountability for my actions.

"I appreciate the support you've all given me on the show and I understand you feel disappointed. I know apologies can seem convenient in these circumstances but I mean it from the bottom of my heart; I am truly sorry. I hope it is possible for you to offer me grace and believe that people can change. I am committed to being the person I am now, the person you have known me as - someone who speaks up, stands for what they believe in and is always open to growth and accountability. Love Trish."
