A Christmas market where sausages are flogged for £8 has been named one of the most affordable in the country in an Overton window shaking, seismic result.

Manchester Christmas Markets has been tipped the UK's 'most affordable' for food and drink. This comes from new research by Diamond Trailers, which placed the festive event in the top ten most affordable, even with prices have gone up this year.

The study looked at the 20 most-searched-for markets in the UK, using online data to find out which were the priciest for mulled wine or a pint. It revealed that Bath is the cheapest market for mulled wine, while Edinburgh is the least expensive for a pint.

Manchester Christmas Markets, recently voted the best in the country, came in tenth place for both mulled wine and beer prices. While the average cost of mulled wine is £5 in Bath, Belfast and Exeter, it's around £5.50 in Manchester, as is the average pint, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Despite being slightly more expensive than other cities, Manchester is still considered cheaper compared to markets like Birmingham and London's Winter Wonderland. There, you'll pay an average of £6.50 for a pint and up to £8 for a mug of mulled wine.

In the North West festive powerhouse there are 225 stalls spread across nine locations. Following its opening last week, the price of one particular pork good raised eyebrows. Sausages now cost an extra pound (£8) at Exchange Square and New Cathedral Street, while hot pork rolls at Piccadilly Gardens have risen from £8 to £9. Yorkshire pudding wraps have also increased by 50p.

Many hot food and drink stalls have seen an average price rise of 50p on popular dishes and beverages. This includes boozy drinks like gluhwein, which has gone up from £5 to £5.50, and hot cider and boozy hot chocolate, which have risen from £5.50 to £6. Some Christmas cocktails have even reached £11.

Diamond Trailers' research didn't consider the cost of market staples like bratwurst and Yorkshire pudding wraps, but these items have also seen a price increase this year. Despite the price hikes, stallholders have defended their actions, blaming it on the rising cost of produce, especially pork, and increased rent for market stalls this year. The only item not affected by the price rise is pints of lager, which have remained steady at an average of £6 a pint across most stalls.

The study also unveiled the most popular UK Christmas Markets based on online searches. As expected, Winter Wonderland tops the list, followed by Edinburgh, York and Bath, with Manchester ranking seventh trailed by Bristol, Leeds and Belfast.
