Terrifying footage shows the moment a ferry in the Bahamas went down, killing an American on board.

The elderly tourist died while the ferry was carrying cruise ship passengers to the private Blue Lagoon island. The ferry had departed from Paradise Island in Nassau.

Local media reports indicate a 75-year-old American died during the sinking, but their cause of death and the time they died remains unclear. Two more passengers were taken for further care, according to the tour operator The Maritime Executive.

The incident on Tuesday morning was captured on a TikTok video by a worried passenger. In footage, passengers can be seen clad in orange life vests as the vessel starts leaning over to one side, some people are seen in the water already as the boat tilts over even further.

As the water rushed in, passengers took to jumping into the water while a small boat hovered nearby. The footage was captured by American tourist Kelly Schissel, who can be heard saying one of the crewmembers was seen crying.

"One of the crewmembers who was downstairs ran upstairs and was crying, absolutely bawling, and grabbing a life jacket. That's when everybody was like "this is real, something's happening," she said. "We were kind of waiting for staff to tell us what to do, which they never did because they were too busy crying and freaking out."

She added: "I also heard the captain was laughing because he was showing off. He was trying to whip the butt-end around, I just don't think it worked out the way he wanted it to...Once it got to the point where one guy jumped in, everybody else said "s***, we might as well get in"."

Schissel said the attempted evacuation into the water was tricky as passengers were met with waves that were "pretty rough." Eventually, Schissel was able to get into a passing fishing boat.

It comes as a scuba dive boat captain was convicted of criminal negligence in the deaths of 34 people killed in a fire aboard the vessel in 2019 earlier this month. The incident was the deadliest maritime disaster in recent US history.

Jerry Boylan, 69, was found guilty of one count of misconduct or neglect of ship officer following a 10-day trial in federal court in downtown Los Angeles. The charge is a pre-Civil War statute colloquially known as seaman’s manslaughter that was designed to hold steamboat captains and crew responsible for maritime disasters.

Boylan is the only person to face criminal charges connected to the fire. He could get 10 years behind bars when he's sentenced on February 8, though he can appeal.
