So here we are already in November, with its colder and frostier weather prompting many gardeners to weigh up their final preparations before winter sets in.

Gardeners are strongly advised to tackle key tasks now in order to get a jumpstart on Spring, allowing you to take it easier for the rest of the year. Plus maintaining the garden throughout the colder months brings plenty of opportunity to sow certain plants for a vibrant winter display.

But navigating these essential seasonal tasks can be overwhelming, which is why a gardening expert has compiled a crystal clear and convenient list to help you. Here, Michael Griffiths - who has more than 179k followers on TikTok - has outlined crucial tasks to accomplish in late autumn and early November before the weather worsens.

Planting:

Revitalise your garden with some tough yet beautiful flowers housed in empty pots capable of withstanding winter frost. Sowing in November can save time in spring and accelerate the blooming process. Choose winter flowers carefully to prevent freezing and decay after frost. Michael recommends adding winter colour with violas, heathers, conifers, and hardy tub plants.

It's mulching time

Use mulch to cover plants, providing fertilisation and additional nutrients while naturally suppressing surrounding weeds. Late autumn is ideal for mulching, using fallen leaves to create organic mulch. Collect the leaves up and place them in a hessian sack to preserve moisture, and use the mulch year-round.

Get that furniture packed up

Clean and store patio furniture for the winter, ensuring a thorough going over with warm, soapy water. Apply a colour protector to wooden furniture for added safeguarding. Michael suggests packing up outdoor furniture after collecting leaves, as outdoor cushions can be damaged in freezing temperatures.

Don't let the weeds win!

Tackle weeds in driveways and borders to maintain a tidy garden during winter. Dealing with weeds in autumn reduces springtime weed problems. Opt for natural weed control methods, such as lemon juice, boiling water, salt, or vinegar, avoiding harsh chemicals that can be harmful to wildlife, especially during hibernation.

As November unfolds, these gardening tasks can help prepare your outdoor space for the colder months while ensuring a vibrant and organised garden in the seasons to come. Good luck!
