Buffalo Bills coach delivers brutal assessment of moment that cost team victory
Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott lamented the mistakes his team made against the Denver Broncos as they lost for a third time in their last four NFL games.
Despite an inefficient display, they managed to take a one-point lead into the closing stages at Bills Stadium. Denver kicker Wil Lutz missed a 41-yard field goal, which looked like being enough to close out a win for the Bills.
However, the Broncos were given a second chance, when the Bills were penalised for having too many players on the field. As the ball was snapped, there were 12 defenders on the field, which resulted in a five-yard penalty and another field goal attempt for Lutz, who made no mistake at the second time of asking.

Joe Burrow backs Patrick Mahomes after Kansas City Chiefs reach Super BowlThe successful kick helped the Broncos secure a 24-22 win and their third successive victory which left Bills coach McDermott very frustrated after the game. "Absolutely, absolutely," he said when asked if it was one of the most inexplicable losses he had experienced.
"We practiced two or three times that this week -- the substitution from dime to field goal block. At the end of the day, we didn't execute it. So, it's inexcusable." The Bills appeared to have an extra lineman on the field for the entire play, which resulted in the penalty.
McDermott did not elaborate on which players were supposed to leave the action, and whether the same play was called on the second field goal attempt at the end of the game was unclear. However, defensive end Leonard Floyd was the only player who was on the field for Lutz’s missed kick, but not for the winning one.
"I don't even know. We just, we messed it up, and unfortunately, it cost us," captain Tyler Matakevich said when assessing the Bills' costly’ errors. "You can't beat yourself in those situations. You got to make sure we're locked in, everyone knows what's going on. I mean, we practiced it.
“We just didn't execute it, and that's real, real frustrating. There's some games, they're going to be ugly at times, you just got to find a way to win it, and unfortunately, we just didn't come out." The Bills’ wretched form continues after losing their fifth game of the season. They have lost three of their last four games and four of their last six.
They made plenty of offensive errors against the Broncos, making four turnovers, equalling the most they have managed in a game this season. Three of them came from quarterback Josh Allen, who had two interceptions and a fumble. He now leads the NFL with 11 interceptions and has an interception in six consecutive games.
"Sucks," Allen said of the recent losses. "Shouldn't have been in that position in the first place. A lot of bad football. A lot of bad football." The Bills have now put themselves in a difficult spot, as they have the third-hardest remaining schedule.
They are still second in the AFC East behind the Miami Dolphins, but after hosting the New York Jets this weekend, the Bills play this season’s best team the Philadephia Eagles, defending champions the Kaiser City Chiefs and the Dallas Cowboys.
