Countryfile's Joe Crowley's mystery love life and heartbreak when son was born

Many regular Countryfile viewers feel as though they know Joe Crowley, resonating with the broadcaster's enthusiasm for the great outdoors and passion for environmental issues. Away from the cameras, however, Joe prefers to keep his personal life private, and little is known about his romantic history. He has however previously opened up about the highs and lows of parenthood, regularly sharing sweet updates via Instagram from homemade birthday cakes to adorable Halloween costumes.

And he previously shared details of a family holiday on Twitter, writing: "Abrupt end to family hols... driving through the early hours to make the latest train we could but kids slept through it all (woop). And we're in Calais! Please send coffee & a sense of humour. #beatquarantine."

The 41-year-old has also spoken candidly about a devastating loss he endured while still a teenager, revealing how his grief would later impact what should have been the "happiest day" of his life.

Painful loss

Norwich-born Joe sadly lost his father to blood cancer when he was just 15 years old. This ordeal has naturally had a huge impact on Joe, who is now an ambassador for the Anthony Nolan Foundation, an organisation that matches potential stem cell donors to blood cancer patients in need of stem cell transplants.

Back in 2020, Joe opened up about his grief on the BBC's Anthony Nolan Storytellers, sharing: "When you lose someone you love from blood cancer it is just devastating, and it will never be the same again, but we have learned to cope, and maybe we are stronger for it."

Bittersweet day of son's birth

As anyone who has ever lost a loved one will undoubtedly know, even the most joyous of days can be tinged with sadness, especially when it comes to welcoming new family members to the world. In the same programme, Joe remembered the day his son Alfie was born, recalling how he couldn't help but think of his own dearly missed father.

Joe explained: "Becoming a parent for the first time is the happiest day of your life, but with all of the happy days, they are also the saddest. You are missing that person in this case, my father, Alfie's grandfather who would have loved Alfie."
