Jonnie Irwin has said that he "felt disgusting" after losing weight following cancer treatment.

The beloved A Place In The Sun presenter was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in 2020, which has since spread to his brain. The 49-year-old has gone through gruelling rounds of treatment, causing him to drop below six stone at one point.

Jonnie's dramatic weight loss left him "shocked" after looking in the mirror. He was struggling to walk and at his lowest point. Ahead of celebrating his 50th birthday, something he never thought would happen, he's now beginning to put the weight back on, but doesn't forget what he went through, citing "incredible pain".

"I remember looking in the mirror and being shocked by what I saw," he told The Sun. "I was skin and bones. I'd always been proud of my body, but I felt disgusting. I wasn't eating and my appetite had completely gone. I knew I needed to come off the morphine. You have to take control." He required large amounts of morphine to cope with the pain. His diet was essential, cutting out meat and carbs and eliminating sugar.

"Lying in the hospice, I thought I’d had it," he told the outlet. "I was on the cusp of death. I'd never thought about dying, despite the cancer, and Jess and I don’t talk about it. But at my weakest point I thought, ‘This is it, this is the beginning of the end’. I couldn’t eat, I had incredible pain in my back and was just skin and bones. I was just lying there in a hospice bed, sleeping a lot of the time."

Jonnie said he 'never thought he'd make it' ahead of plans for his 50th birthday he's set to celebrate in just a few days' time. He was initially told he wouldn't live to see his twins' third birthday party. The star shares children Rex, four, and twins Rafa and Cormac, three - with wife Jessica. It's been almost five months since his twins turned three and the star is focusing on living his best life with his friends and family.

As his 50th birthday approaches, Jonnie revealed he and his family plan to travel to Spain to celebrate the special milestone while they wait for the test results from his radiotherapy treatments. "I never thought I’d be here," he revealed. "I’m really looking forward to some time with Jess and the boys."

In November, he said the tumour in his lung had spread to his brain and since learning of his diagnosis, Jonnie has been focused on creating memories with his wife and children. The presenter regularly takes to social media to share videos and photos of family nights and outings. Last month, Jonnie celebrated his seventh wedding anniversary with his wife.

He has been married to 40-year-old Jessica since 2016. Jonnie and Jessica went to a Michelin-starred restaurant for a romantic meal, where they enjoyed some alone time together. And taking to Instagram, the TV star shared a snapshot from their night, showing him and his wife sitting opposite each other preparing to enjoy a dessert.

Sharing the image online, Jonnie added the following caption: "7 years married to this Angel. I use this term because the love she shows to others is beyond comparison. Last night was just us; chatting, planning and gossiping. So good. Amazing food and staff at @lovagejesmond made our evening perfect. #anniversary."

His post drew attention from social media followers - with A Place in the Sun star Jasmine Harman among those reacting to the post. She wrote: "Gosh 7 years! I remember your wedding day like yesterday! Lots of love to you both and Happy Anniversary." Fellow A Place in the Sun host Amanda Lamb also responded, writing: "Happiest of days to you both you gorgeous pair" alongside three red heart emojis.
