Coronation Street's Sam Aston is preparing to become a dad for the third time.

The actor who plays Chesney Brown on the ITV soap opera shares a son, Sonny, three, and a daughter Daisy, 18 months. Previously, the couple have endured two tragic miscarriages within four months of one another.

Now, the 30-year-old and his wife have shared that they were expecting twins but sadly lost one due to Vanishing Twin Syndrome. This happens when a baby stops growing and the mother absorbs the embryo and tissue. The couple admit that they have questioned 'what could have been' but have stated they're grateful that their family is continuing to grow.

In a new interview, they shared their joy over the pregnancy and stated that it was "very bittersweet". Their twin pregnancy was detected by a midwife during a scan, which showed two non-identical twins, who were developing in separate amniotic sacs with their own placentas. However, Briony admits that had they not had an earlier scan, she wouldn't have known she was expecting twins.

"It does explain why I was so sick and tired this time around compared to my other pregnancies," she told OK! Magazine. Sharing his initial reaction, Sam, who has played Chesney for two decades admitted he was "shocked" before questioning would he and his wife have had a boy and a girl. He added: "Like Briony says, it's definitely bittersweet, but we just feel very grateful that the other baby is absolutely fine."

The actor went on to reveal that at the 12-week scan, his wife "breathed a big sigh of relief" as they discovered a "strong heartbeat" and saw their baby moving while the scan was in progress – signalling that the child is healthy. The actor and his wife then discovered the gender of their unborn child, a daughter, after Briony had a blood test. However, she was adamant that they were set to welcome a second son.

Discovering the gender of their daughter was also a bittersweet moment for Briony who had a list of boy's names ready but she now believes the baby they lost may have been a boy. Although they have not yet decided on a name for their little one, the couple, in private, have named their lost twin.

Briony, who is a trainee midwife went on to reveal that she's hoping for a home birth and joked that there is nowhere else she would rather be. Previously, she and Sam welcomed their daughter Daisy at home before enjoying tea and toast before getting straight into their own bed.
