A woman has been left outraged after her father-in-law fat shamed her just five months after giving birth to her daughter. The 25-year-old woman explained how her father-in-law started commenting on her appearance after they returned home from a family holiday in Florida.

He shamed her for "gaining weight" and said she had "a belly while wearing shorts". Taking to Reddit, the mum-of-two said: "He said it in a 'trying to make a joke' way - but he didn't stop. He kept adding that I didn't used to have that belly and it looked like I had gained weight." When she later brought this up with him, he got "defensive" and slammed her for "not being able to take a joke".

She added: "We were sitting at the dinner table and I brought up that I didn't like the comment he made.

"He got defensive and said that I shouldn't take it to heart that it's how he sees me and that I have two kids, also that I'm not 'young' anymore that I'm old now for having two kids.

"He said 'It's not my fault you're insecure about yourself and that you can't take a joke'. He got more defensive because we had family visiting and he didn't want to seem like that bad person."

She burst into tears at the dinner table - which was only made worse when her mother-in-law came to her husband's defence.

"I started crying because I’m having a tough time with my postpartum and losing weight after having two kids," she said.

"My mother-in-law started defending her husband by saying that he didn't mean it in that way and that he jokes around.

"He ended up saying that if I don't like the way he jokes around then I shouldn't come back to his house.

"Unfortunately my husband couldn't come with us to the trip - he was working. He wasn't there when this happened.

"I told my husband and he was annoyed he told his step dad off and his mum.

"He expected his mum to stand up for me as a woman but she didn't which hurt him but he had my back the whole time and understands how I feel."

The woman is now trying to give her in-laws a wide berth because she doesn't want her children growing up thinking it's OK to say comments like that.

While most users shared their shock over what her in-laws put her through, others supported her decision to keep her children away from them as much as possible.

One user said: "There is no context in which your father in law should be commenting on your weight or body shape."

Another user added: "Your body's been changing so much for 9 months of pregnancy and now five months of post pregnancy, it's wonderful what our bodies do.

"That being said, this guy is an entitled a***hole and should not be making comments about anyone's body, let alone one that just blessed him with a grandchild!"

A third user said: "My late father-in-law loved to criticize my weight and yelled at me for gaining five pounds during my first pregnancy' first trimester.

"He earned himself a time out for the rest of my pregnancy and very, very low contact for the next year until he passed away."
