It's a great time of year to start feeding the birds. With colder weather looming, and the natural autumn bounty starting to dwindle, putting out food in our gardens will give our feathered friends a boost when they need it most.
As we descend into winter, we're approaching what wildlife watchers call the "hungry gap", when there's very little natural food about, and energy reserves are being poured into nesting and mating, during what can be the coldest time of year.
So putting out seeds, suet, peanuts, and mealworms will give garden birds a much-needed leg up.
And why not take a close look at the visitors you're helping? Bird feeders can be bought for a couple of quid, but a smart bird feeder will capture images of the birds that arrive and pipe them directly to your smartphone.

Let's start with a smart bird feeder that's priced well below £100 and getting great reviews. Cozion's bird feeder has a 1080P camera with night vision, a large seed container, and a detachable extension for accommodating larger birds.
Amazon says it comes with a 32 GB micro SD card, which is handy and a 1,000mAh should keep it going for several days between charges, even if your birds are busy.
Reviewers have called it a "game changer" and "a great way to get up close and personal with your local birdlife". It sounds great for the money.
Maxant Clear Window Bird Feeder - £23.89
Want to go even cheaper? Try this window bird feeder, which seems a remarkable deal for less than £25.
You can choose a round one or a triangular one, and the tiny camera is said to deliver 1080P footage.
There's no motion detection, so you'll need to be on the ball, and bear in mind birds don't always go for window feeders - but it does look like you could hang it in a tree.
It comes with a 200mAh battery and charging cable, and a 170-degree viewing angle is immense.
It is, however, worth pointing out that the reviews are pretty discouraging. People are saying it's incredibly small and hard to keep a stable connection with the camera.
But Amazon does have a robust returns policy, and it is so cheap it almost feels like it's worth a punt.

This one looks like it might be the most complete package for less than £100, and it's such a hefty discount. If you catch the coupon deal you could get it for £84.99. What a bargain.

It has a solar panel built in to its unusually-shaped frame, which is a bonus, but it does look rather small, and I reckon its shape will make it fairly easy to fill.
The camera specs look strong, it has plenty of mounting options, and it's great to see it has a motion sensor and includes an SD card.
It's only had three reviews, but buyers are raving about it. This might just be the best bargain on the list.
Bozily Smart Bird Feeder with Camera - £89.99, with a £30-off voucher deal
Yes, I've found another one for less than £100. This one looks spookily like the Cozion Smart Bird feeder, but it has a solar panel bundled in. And solar panels are so handy, because you won't have to keep going out to charge the camera off USB.
The voucher deal brings it comfortably below £100, and all the right boxes are ticked - a 1080P camera, motion sensor, and even night-vision. I'm actually tempted by this one myself.
There are only seven reviews so far, but every single one is five stars, which is a really positive sign.
SuplutuX Bird Feeder with Camera - £119.99, with a £20-off voucher deal
We're going up in price a bit now, but this one looks like a great package deal. It bundles in a six-watt solar panel, which should be enough to keep it going throughout the winter months, and I love the woodland camo look.
The 6400mAh rechargeable battery is one of the biggest you'll find in a smart bird feeder, and there's clearly plenty of room for seed storage.
I like the fact it has an extended platform to help bigger birds get a look-in, and the camera's 180-degree field of view is excellent. This one also comes with a 64 MB memory card, along with free 30-day cloud storage.
The reviews for this one are really strong, although one buyer did mention the instructions are a bit poor.
Netvue Birdfy Pro -Smart Bird Feeder with Camera - was £239.99, now £199.99
If you can afford it, do step up to this superb smart bird feeder from Birdfy, one of the market leaders. I have this one in my garden and it's just superb.
This is the Pro version, so it comes with a very useful solar panel, and also a package that extends the feeding platform and adds a suet-ball holder and a fruit spike.
While it does have motion detection, this one doesn't have the AI identification system, you'd need to either pay extra for that, or hop up to the AI version, which is currently £229.99 if you use a £50 voucher.
Netvue Birdfy Bamboo Bird Feeder - £199.99, thanks to a £60-off coupon
If you like a bit of style in your garden, this is the one to go for. It's usually £259.99, so there's a big saving and it's just such a lovely thing to look at.
It's made from sustainable bamboo, and it's a bit on the bulky side, but the seed hopper is huge, birds seem to love the natural wood and it comes with a solar panel.
When I tested it I did find it's a bit vulnerable to squirrel attacks, but it is nice and easy to mount, despite its size.
You currently have to pay extra for AI detection, which is a bit disappointing at this price point, but if you want the ultimate smart bird feeder, this really is it.
