Keeping your car running smoothly as well as looking like new can rack up the pounds - but there is a way to get your car looking sparkling for less.

With autumn bringing low visibility and less-than-ideal weather conditions, keeping your car's headlights and windscreen clean is a must, and an expert explains that the solution could cost as little as 30p… and the best news is, you might even have everything you need in your kitchen cupboards already.

The experts at BigWantsYourCar.com explain that half a lemon, a sprinkle of bicarbonate of soda and a clean cloth could be a versatile solution to cleaning both the inside and outside of your car, leaving it "spotless and odour-free".

"It's truly surprising how many Brits don't know about this incredibly affordable car cleaning hack," Peter Waddell, car expert at BigWantsYourCar.com, told the Daily Star. "With just half a lemon, baking powder, and a cloth, you can keep both the interior and exterior of your car spotless and odour-free.

"The acidic lemon and abrasive baking [soda] works wonders in getting any dirt and grime off your headlights. It's an easy, cost-effective way to ensure your car's exterior remains in top condition."

Peter added that as well as getting your car looking as good as new, a clean car can actually improve the safety of your commute. The days getting shorter during the winter months can mean visibility on the roads can be poor, and dirty headlights can only add to difficult driving conditions. In fact, dirty headlights can even land you with an on-the-spot fine of anywhere between £30 and £100.

"The importance of clear headlights can't be understated, especially during autumn when visibility can be challenging. Using this life hack to clean your headlights gives you a clear view of the road and keeps you safe," he said. To use the hack, make a paste by juicing the lemon into a few tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda, and use the cloth to rub away at any stubborn dirt on your car, before rinsing with water.

The experts added that combating smells inside your car as well as keeping the exterior clean and shining "can make your daily commute more pleasant and inviting". So get digging in your kitchen cupboards and life hack your way to a squeaky-clean car.
