Martin Lewis has shared a cheeky trick on how certain energy customers can get a free £50 added to their account.

The Money Saving Expert (MSE) website founder shared the hint on his ITV show - The Martin Lewis Money Show - earlier this week whilst responding to a viewer's success story. The success story came from someone called Michael and he explained that his sister was affected by the current Octopus Energy takeover of Shell Energy customers.

In September, the supplier Shell Energy agreed to sell its home energy business to Octopus. The deal was set to see all of Shell's two million customers in the UK and Germany switch over to Octopus - giving the firm nearly 6.5million UK customers.

Michael shared that he had followed Martin's advice and taken advantage of Octopus Energy's "Refer a Friend" scheme. The scheme rewards customers for suggesting the energy firm to others and existing consumers with Octopus can sign into their account and ask for a unique referral link to send on to a friend.

Once the friend does the switch and their first monthly direct debit has been paid, you should each be eligible for £50 energy credits. If Octopus customers refer the scheme to a Shell Energy customer before they are transferred over then both will receive the extra energy credit. Martin described the advice as his "naughty little comment".

He added: "If you know someone on Octopus, they have a refer a friend scheme. So, before you're automatically moved over, just go and get your friend to give you a reference and move you over a bit earlier. And then he gets £50 and she'll get £50 as well. Octopus is going to hate me for that. I didn't say it. You didn't hear it here!"

Octopus Energy says the £50 rewards are only provided if their website is used directly for the new sign-up, rather than through a consumer switching switching. There is also no limit on the number of friends you can recommend.

When the move was announced, Octopus told Shell Energy customers to “sit tight for now” as the deal was subject to regulatory approval and was expected to be completed in the last three months of 2023. After this, Octopus will begin to move customers over.

This may take a few months to complete so there is time for customers to jump on this hack.

Octopus Energy announced it was going to take over the collapsed energy firm Bulb at the end of last year and at the time Bulb had 1.5million UK customers. The migration of customers started in December 2022, just two days after the official completion date of the takeover. Octopus completed the transition of all Bulb customers in June of this year - so there will still be time to take advantage of this trick.
