Hollyoaks star Emma Rigby has made her way back to the soap after 12 years away.

The actress, 34, is known for her role as Hannah Ashworth in the long-running soap. She first appeared on-screen in 2005 and stayed on until the beginning of 2010. Her character Hannah was involved in a serious storyline that saw her develop anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

The controversial storyline also saw Hannah's best pal, Melissa Hurst, dying from an eating disorder. Emma's performance gained a lot of critical acclaim and she won a few awards for the portrayal of the character, including Best Actress at the 2008 British Soap Awards.

Her other dramatic storylines included a relationship with John Paul McQueen that ended when he revealed he was gay. There was also a motorcycle accident as well as nearly being alive in The Loft.

In new photos shared by The Sun, she was seen hugging Ste Hay actor Kieron Richardson. In the snaps, she looked over the moon to be back as the duo laughed and smiled like no time had been spent away from the show. The Mirror has contacted Hollyoaks for more information.

Digital Spy also confirmed her return as a source told them the show had a few "exciting" scenes planned. When she left Hollyoaks, Emma went on to big series and movies like BBC drama Prisoner Wives and Once Upon A Time in Wonderland - which is a Once Upon A Time spin-off.

She also had the role of Tony's Girlfriend in the Ridley Scott-directed film The Counsellor, which stars Michael Fassbender, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz and Brad Pitt. Toby Kebbell, known for Dead Man's Shoes, Gold, Black Mirror and Apply TV Plus series Servant, played Tony.

Her last movie role was in The Power and her last television series was in Make Me Famous. She previously discussed the difficulty of getting other roles after leaving Hollyoaks. The actress said: "When I left Hollyoaks I could barely get any interviews for months. Casting directors wouldn’t let me in the door.

"They would just see ‘Hollyoaks’ and say no. So when I came to America, it was incredibly liberating to be given the chance to prove what I could do, and that I could transform for roles." She added that she had to 'sacrifice' many relationships and friendships to focus on her career.
