An on-duty police officer who had a threesome with a drunken woman in the patrol car alongside his predatory colleague is facing time in prison.

However Matthew Longmate will still be able to spend Christmas with his family after a judge bailed him until next year. The 47-year-old denied misconduct took place in 2015 and claimed a threesome would have been ‘physically impossible’ in the vehicle.

He was on duty with Daniel Nash, 41, who had used his job to pursue relationships with 13 women, including victims of domestic violence between January 2015 and December 2020. A jury at Southwark Crown Court unanimously convicted Longmate, who worked with Derbyshire Constabulary, of the offence after deliberating for seven hours and 46 minutes.

They heard how the two officers preyed on their victim after she was thrown out of a bar. Her police interview recalled: “I remember (Nash) trying it on with me and I remember being the same back. We were just kissing and I don't know how it got to where it did, but obviously I know they ended up sleeping with me.”

She explained that Nash was encouraging the other officer to get involved, saying ‘come on, mate’. The following day she said she 'felt sick about it' and was worried she would see them again. Nash later sent her messages via Facebook and texted her asking her to have sex with him.

Polly Dyer, prosecuting told the court that while the woman only positively identified Nash, Longmate had been his partner on the night of the incident. Nash also named Longmate as the other officer in the car on that day, jurors heard.

Nash had even offered her £500 for sex before the woman contacted police in 2020. When Longmate was arrested in November 2021 he denied he had been in the car with Nash at the time of the incident in 2015. Judge Chris Hehir told Longmate: “You have been convicted by the jury of this serious offence. Almost any police officers convicted of offences such as this do go straight to prison, but I do want to find out as much information as I can about you before passing sentence. I am going to return you to bail until 15 January 2024, when you must return to this court for sentencing. Due to the likely sentence I do want to allow him to spend Christmas with his family.”

Deputy Chief Constable Simon Blatchly said: “Longmate has no place in policing and, following, his guilty verdict an accelerated hearing will take place to remove him from the force. I am deeply shocked and angered by his actions, as I know officers and staff are across the force. However, I want to be clear that the independent investigation into this matter by the Independent Office for Police Conduct found no wider knowledge or offending by any other officer or staff member."

Nash earlier admitted 14 counts of misconduct against him but he was given a two year prison sentence, suspended for two years, in August as an act of mercy because he was suffering from bowel cancer. A judge was told Nash had about six months to live but has since passed away.
