A man who went to the dentist for a routine appointment was left shocked after medics told him his dental issues were the result of a rare and aggressive form of cancer.

Faisal Khan - known as Joey - and his partner Shannen Edwards had just bought a house together in Wales before they received the devastating news. The 25-year-old electrician, from Birmingham, had received two tooth extractions at his dentist but had a feeling something wasn’t right when his mouth didn’t fully heal.

He was referred to hospital because the swelling was getting worse. Medics took a biopsy sample of the bone and tissue in his mouth. A few days later he received a diagnosis of Burkitt's lymphoma - a rare and aggressive form of non Hodgkin’s lymphoma (blood cancer). But despite the Stage 4 cancer diagnosis at the Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre leaving Joey facing MRIs, PET scans, CT scans and other appointments, with Shannen caring for her partner, the couple have not been able to claim financial aid, a friend said.

Close pal Robyn Simmons explained: “They have been told that they are not entitled to any benefits, no support with energy bills, no council tax reduction, nothing. They never ever thought they’d be in a position to even contemplate asking for financial help as they both work hard but the unforeseen circumstances mean they are struggling to make ends meet.”

Robyn has now started a GoFundMe account to help out the couple, reports Plymouth Live. It is already on £5,725 with hundreds of donations flooding in for the popular pair. She added: “I have known Shannen for 18 years and Faisal (Joey) for two years. I decided to organise a GoFundMe page as watching them go through this difficult time and seeing them get no help was breaking my heart. I just wanted to relieve the money worries.”
