Train passengers and commuters are facing travel chaos this afternoon as a result of a landslip blocking the line, causing delays and cancelations.

Services are being diverted between Huddersfield and Leeds as a result of the landslide at Dewsbury, with people warned of issues which are likely to continue for several hours. National Rail warned on its website the routes affected by the issues include Northern services between Leeds and Wigan Wallgate, TransPennine Express services between Leeds and Huddersfield, and between Saltburn and Manchester Airport, and between Newcastle, Scarborough and Manchester Piccadilly, also between Hull, Newcastle and Liverpool Lime Street.

It said on its website: "Due to a landslip between Leeds and Huddersfield, some lines are blocked. As a result, trains may be cancelled, delayed by up to 45 minutes or diverted via Bradford Interchange. Disruption is expected until 3pm.

"Morley, Batley, Dewsbury, Mirfield and Brighouse will not be served. Customers are advised to change at Bradford Interchange onto the Huddersfield service as this calls at Brighouse. Passengers can then travel from Huddersfield back towards Leeds on TransPennine Express services for intermediate stations. Alternatively, passengers can travel to Sowerby Bridge and board a service back in the Leeds direction via Brighouse and intermediate stations."

People may use their tickets on Northern services between Leeds and Huddersfield via Bradford, and also between Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester at no extra cost. Rail replacement road transport has been requested to operate from Dewsbury, calling at all stations to Huddersfield.
