Nintendo has announced that a live-action movie based on The Legend of Zelda is in development with Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad producing the film.

Considering the monumental success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie – which broke several box office records and was the highest grossing film of 2023 until Barbie overtook it – and the massive sales figures for Super Mario Bros. Wonder following that – it's only natural that Nintendo would want to expand more of its hit series into films.

While the main rumours were that a Donkey Kong or Luigi's Mansion movie would follow up Super Mario Bros., it was a given that one day Nintendo's number two franchise – The Legend of Zelda – would be in line for an adaption. Especially since rumours of an animated Zelda film in development at The Super Mario Bros. Movie studio, Illumination Entertainment, popped up earlier this year.

What wasn't a given was that a live-action The Legend Of Zelda movie would be announced on Twitter on a random Tuesday night. But that's exactly what happened as Shigeru Miyamoto took to the Nintendo Twitter account and announced that a The Legend of Zelda live-action movie film is in production. Miyamoto also confirmed that he would be producing the film alongside Avi Arad, who is best known as the producer on the majority of the Spider-Man films at Sony.

Alongside the Tweet was a press release which confirmed The Legend Of Zelda will be co-financed by Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment, and that Wes Ball – director of The Maze Runner films, and the upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes – will be directing the film. Funnily enough, fans quickly found a 2010 Tweet from Ball waxing lyrical about how "the next big mo-cap Avatar-like movie" should be The Legend of Zelda, prefacing his wish with "since I could never even hope to have the chance to direct it".

Hey, listen!

Obviously, fans are a bit apprehensive about what a The Legend of Zelda live-action film could be, with many fans calling for an animated film from the likes of Studio Ghibli or Laika before the announcement. And of course, the Tom Holland as Link jokes started flying the second Sony Pictures involvement was confirmed (following the actor's miscast role as Nathan Drake in the Uncharted film).

However, while many are happy to note that Avi Arad is the producer of some amazing films like the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies, the Tom Holland Spider-Man Trilogy, and the Spider-Verse films, I won't lie – his involvement has me worried for the fate of The Legend of Zelda live-action movie. Almost every terrible superhero film from the mid-to-late 2000's was produced by Arad, such as Hulk, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.

Arad was also to blame for Venom being forced into Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 despite the director not wanting to tackle the character. Which, in turn, led to Spider-Man 3 being the worst of the trilogy. It was bad enough that Arad himself even says he regrets the decision to add Venom to the film years later. But then again, I didn't have high hopes for The Super Mario Bros. Movie when Chris Pratt and Illumination Entertainment were confirmed to be involved and that turned out to be a fun time, so maybe the same will happen here.
