All families have secrets, and they usually don't want the world to know them, so when a scorned mum found her ex-boyfriend had been seeing another woman, she claimed 'cruel' revenge by plastering a closely guarded family recipe over the internet.

Gifted handwritten instructions on how to make pizza dough by her former partner's mum before she even dated him, Jen Ley said she didn't think her former partner deserved to enjoy the "delicious" recipe with his new girlfriend.

The 40-year-old said she told ex Joe about the recipe during their three-month relationship but they split when he allegedly admitted to seeing another woman and when she was told Joe wanted his mum's recipes back so that he could get his new girlfriend to make it, she felt like it was a "scalpel opening up a scar".

The mum-of-three admits the relationship and break-up made it hard for her to trust people so instead of giving it back, Jen decided to begin giving out the secret instructions online to thousands of social media users as retaliation last month.

Jen, from Rockford, Illinois, said: "As petty as it sounds there's so much more to it than just the recipe. When I heard about [him wanting it back] it was like taking a scalpel and opening up a scar. It really hurt so badly again.

"He broke my trust. At first I started sobbing and it felt like someone stabbed me in the heart. It was a deep feeling of sadness I thought I'd left behind but it came right back. When he realised I had the recipes, he decided he wanted to make amends. I think he just wants the recipe back."

It's now been seen by thousands of people online as she shared it in a Facebook group with more than 150,000 members. Some users praised her for being "next level petty" and even claimed Joe's mum could have given it to her as she didn't want him to have it.

However others blasted the social-care worker for "weaponising" the recipe for "likes and validation" and branded it "oddly cruel" to keep it from her former partner – particularly as they belonged to his mother.

She's since said sharing it and hearing the feedback has helped her come to terms with surrendering the recipe and she now plans to post it to him. Jen added: "My friend believes he's sorry but I know manipulation when I see it and I really don't think he is. I knew that he wasn't really sorry so I thought 'why should I give it to him?' but if something of my mum's was kept from me, I would want that.

"I've no right not to give it to him but at the same time she gave it to me as a gift. The recipes are very labour-intensive but believe me they're worth it and the pizza is the most delicious I've ever had."

Jen says her relationship with Joe ended when she saw a message from another woman thanking him for "reminding her of how much she means to him". She was told Joe remembered she had the much-cherished pizza recipe when his new girlfriend cooked some for him and he told her it wasn't as good as his mum's.

Jen insists she doesn't feel guilty that Joe hasn't seen it as it's helped her come to terms with the hurtful situation. She said: "By posting it I was able to get a different perspective. I don't feel guilty that it's on Facebook. It made me realise that if I'm going to share it with him then everyone should have it.

"Maybe that's not the best way to go about it but it helped me work through all of that trauma and helped me get more comfortable with the idea of letting go of the recipes. People have reached out and thanked me for sharing it and they can't wait to try it. That's a positive from this whole situation."

Jen added that "life has treated her well" and she's bought her own home and her dream car since the harrowing split. She also has another boyfriend and says she will not contact Joe but will return the recipe.

Her Facebook post – where the instructions list a lengthy two-hour process of making pizza dough with the unusual inclusion of eggs and milk – has been liked and commented on more than 1,200 times, with the mum explaining the background to her post due to the interest it gained.

Jen's initial post said: "My loser ex-boyfriend wants to apologise in order to get his dead mother's pizza recipe from me so his new girlfriend can make it for him. What should I do?" One commented: "If his mother wanted him to have the recipe she would have given it to him. She gave it to you to snag a new man cause she knew her son wasn't s**t."

Another said: "I love that you gave it to us instead of him. That's next level petty and I'm here for it." Jen replied: "I felt like if I'm going to share it, why not with everyone here? He asked me to share it, so I did. Malicious compliance FTW."

However, one said: "Weaponising his mum's passing is a really sh**ty thing to do especially given that you've posted it here for strangers for likes and validation. He probably didn't think to ask for it bc it was so long ago and people never think to ask for that type of stuff because you never anticipate losing a parent and then it's too late."

A second agreed: "It's his dead mother's recipe. Anything that woman owned and you're still in possession of is just wrong." And a third added: "She should give his dead mum's recipe to him. It's so oddly cruel to withhold it unless you're trying to be worse than he was."
