Barbra Streisand has discussed having been told to get a nose job and cap her teeth earlier in her career, suggesting that she's "still hurt" by "insults" over her appearance.

The singer, 81, opens up about her life and decades-long career in her upcoming memoir My Name Is Barbra, which is set to be released on Tuesday. Ahead of its publication later this week, excerpts have been shared from the new book.

This includes Barbra - who's received numerous awards in her career including Academy Awards and Grammy Awards - discussing deciding against having a procedure on her nose amid such a suggestion from other people.

Barbra states in an excerpt shared by People magazine: "I had already been told by several people that I should get a nose job and cap my teeth." The actor suggested that she'd felt as though her talent was "enough" for success though.

She said that a nose job "would hurt" and be "expensive," adding that she wasn't convinced that she could trust a surgeon to do "exactly" what she would have wanted. Barbra went on to discuss the possibility of having a procedure.

The actor - who's been in films like Funny Girl (1968) and Yentl (1983) - said she liked "the bump" on her nose. She posed the possibility of a "minor adjustment" to "straighten it slightly" and "take a tiny bit" off the top though.

Dismissing the idea, she said it was "too much of a risk" and suggested that it might affect her voice. Barbra added that she had once been told by a doctor that she had a deviated septum and speculated that it may have influenced the way she sings.

She further commented that she "liked long noses," stating that the late actor Silvana Mangano - who starred in films like The Witches (1967) - "had one". Barbra added that "everyone" seemed to consider Silvana "beautiful".

The outlet shared another excerpt from the memoir in which Barbra mentioned her physical appearance. She's said to have stated that at times it felt like her nose "got more press" than she did. She went on to discuss her appearance being commented on.

She recalled one instance in which her nose was reportedly described as a "shrine" but was also said to divide a "long and sad face" and give the "essence of hound". Barbra acknowledged that the commentary around her appearance did affect her.

She added in an excerpt from the upcoming memoir, shared by the outlet this week: "Even after all these years, I'm still hurt by the insults and can't quite believe the praise." She suggested that celebrities are seen as "public property".

Further commenting on this, she said that they become an "object" to be "examined, photographed, analysed [and] dissected". Barbra said that she often doesn't "recognise" the person "they portray" and tries to avoid reading about herself.

Barbra has spoken about not changing her physical appearance on previous occasions, including telling Glamour magazine back in 2013: "My nose was part of my heritage, and if I had talent to sing and to act, why wasn't that enough?"
