Millions of people across the UK will come together this weekend to remember the fallen heroes who died in battle as part of Remembrance Day.

The memorial day will allow families of the Armed Forces and the Commonwealth to pay tribute to the nation's war heroes with local celebrations set to take place across the country on November 12. The service will also shine a light on civilian servicemen and women throughout the two world wars and later conflicts.

The National Service of Remembrance will take place at the Cenotaph on Whitehall, London, and is open to members of the public. People will be able to watch the ceremony on the pavements along Whitehall and Parliament Street and do not need tickets. Brits will be asked to take part in a two-minute silence, which will begin at the first stroke of Big Ben at 11am. Several hymns, accompanied by the Bands of the Guards Division, will be sung in the morning. Everyone present for the service will be asked to participate in the singing. The Lord Bishop of London will provide a prayer and also give The Blessing. Below we have listed the main timings of the event.

What is happening on Armistice Day?

The Met Police has vowed to use its powers to prevent disruption to Remembrance weekend celebrations following pro-Palestinian protests. It comes after tens of thousands of campaigners are demanding for immediate ceasefire in Israel’s attacks on Gaza. It has been reported that Demonstrators are planning to call for action on Armistice Day on November 11. There are concerns that the demonstration could interfere with the two-minute silence and the daytime and evening Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall, which the Royal Family usually attend. The Met said: “This is a weekend with huge national significance. We will use all the powers available to us to ensure anyone intent on disrupting it will not succeed. We’re absolutely committed to ensuring the safety and security of anyone attending commemorative events.”
