Millionaire makes single mum's dreams come true after living on £59 week

A millionaire participant on Channel 5's Rich House Poor House reduced single mum Julie to tears after transforming her home and kick-starting her business dreams.

Living off just £59 week once all her bills had been paid, Julie made no secret of the fact she has been struggling to live comfortably after her business collapsed three years ago. The single mum used to run a doggy daycare service, which was a success until the Covid-19 pandemic hit the UK forcing her to close her company down. Julie then found herself in debt as she struggled to pay off credit cards and loans and now has a bad credit rating.

Viewers saw the former business owner swap homes with a millionaire called Jazz and said she'd joined the show because she wanted to achieve more with her life. Meanwhile, Jazz said he wanted to remember his humble beginnings. And this was why, at the end of the social experiment, he changed her life forever as her situation reminded him of hardships growing up. Julie told viewers: "It was a well established company, and then COVID hit and instantly shut me down. I had no income, I wasn’t able to pay my bank loan, credit card and other things like that. So I had to go to a Solvency company, and now I have bad credit."

Julie, who now works in a care home to make ends meet, said: "Once I pay my rent, council tax, gas and electricity, I’m left with very little – I’m left with about £59 for shopping." She is mum to two daughters Chloe, 21 and Martine, 17, who is in theatre school, in Halstead, Essex. But her daughter Chloe, who is qualifying in cosmetic aesthetics, doesn’t have her own bedroom and has to sleep in the living room.

Julie continued: "I hate the fact that she doesn’t even have her own bedroom, I’m looking to see if I can do something with the conservatory and make it into a bedroom for her. But I haven’t got the money to do that at the moment. It’s not easy, we make do, we get on and muck in together." Julie dreams of running a restaurant or a pub which will have charity event days for people suffering with diseases such as dementia.

Living a completely different life to Julie is businessman Jazz, 36 and his partner Catia, who live 42 miles away in Romford. Originating from humble beginnings, he started his first company as a football coach when he was only 17 and managed to upscale his company to a £3million business with 30 members of staff. And, in 2020, Jazz, who lives in a five bedroom house complete with a steam room, sold the business and started a consultancy which helps people grow their business ideas.

He said: "I remember when I was 12 years old my mum gave me her last £20 to go to the shop and get some milk, I lost the £20 on my way because I was playing football and I realised that was the first time I saw tears in my mum's eyes. I realised that money has a massive impact on your life." The single mum was given a weekly budget £1,200 while Jazz was given just £59. Speaking of his budget, he said: "Imagine working from Monday through to Friday, and that’s what you’ve got to spend for your family. It must be quite psychologically challenging, because people will often say, well why am I doing this?"

While staying at Julie's house, Catia and Jazz bought Chloe a new bed with storage as Jazz said their situation resonated with him from his childhood. He said: "I remember times when we had just enough money to survive, but we didn’t have money to thrive. It’s given me the discipline to go out there and really create something of my life, and help others on the way."

And at the end of the social experiment the couple meet up at a nearby hotel to discuss their experience and it was at this point that Julie realised that her life was to make a dramatic turn for the better. Jazz and Catia said they were going to help get her business started by helping to put her first event together, which made Julie break down in tears, as she simply said "thank you". Catia then mentioned that they were thinking about turning Julie's conservatory into a living space so Chloe can finally have her own room. Julie appeared lost for words as she said: "It’s so kind of you to do that for me when you don’t even know me."
