Two men were seriously hurt after a firework exploded inside their moving BMW.

The incident happened in Kirkby, Merseyside just before midday on Sunday, with police confirming they were called out following reports of a "loud bang". Footage shows the moment the firework went off inside the car as grey smoke is seen billowing out as a bright red spark shows the firework burning inside.

A passer-by can be seen walking on the pavement ducking for cover while the car continues on down the road before the video ends. Eyewitnesses said that everyone in the car "bailed out" before three of them got back in, leaving one man on the road. This man was said to be "very badly hurt", with people saying he had "lost part of his hand".

Merseyside Police have since said that two men suffered serious injuries to their face and hand and were taken to hospital. A black BMW was seen leaving the scene after the incident. Emergency services, including the North West Ambulance Service, attended and it's reported that the firework is believed to have gone off by accident. By 2pm, all emergency services had left the scene.

Chief Inspector Duncan Swan, who is in charge of Merseyside Police's Bonfire Night operation, said: "Please be cautious when handling fireworks as accidents like this can happen causing serious or fatal injuries. They are not something to be messed with but should be handled in a responsible and controlled manner."

He added: "Everyone should be aware that it is illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to possess or use fireworks in a public place. We urge the public to be cautious and to think again before holding a firework display at home, and instead encourage you to attend organised displays as they are controlled and safer which means less risk of people being injured or bonfires spreading out of control."
