Strictly's Annabel Croft's late husband's heartbreaking last wish for her

Former tennis star Annabel Croft has gained a new army of fans with her Strictly dance floor moves and won the heart of the nation with her efforts. The former tennis pro has admitted the BBC show is helping heal her broken heart following the death of her beloved husband earlier this year.

She made an emotional appearance on week five of Strictly Come Dancing when the 57-year-old TV presenter broke down in tears after revealing the heartbreaking loss of her husband, Mel Coleman, earlier this year. Speaking to professional dancer Johannes Radebe, who she was paired with for the 2023 series of the show, Annabel opened up about her husband's dream for her to take part in Strictly Come Dancing. "I just wish you had met my husband," she said. "I have these flashbacks to our house and him watching you with tears running down his face. Honestly, it's so special, it's beyond anything I could put into words."

Mel Coleman was an America's Cup and Admiral's Cup yachtsman and Annabel said that taking part in the show meant so much more than just dancing. She added: "I wished more than anything that he could see me performing. It's his dream that I'm here." Annabel's emotional appearance on the show touched the hearts of many viewers and despite the difficult times she has faced this year, Annabel's strength and courage continue to inspire many others.

In 1993, Annabel and Mel were married and had two daughters and a son together. Their lives were turned upside down in May when he was diagnosed with stage three stomach cancer just two months after complaining of stomach pains. He died eight weeks after his diagnosis.

Still dealing with her very recent loss, Annabel said she feels “proud” to be a part of this year’s Strictly in his memory. "My husband absolutely loved Strictly,” she said. He used to call me over if I was cooking, and he was crying watching it. So, I hope he’s watching.” During the Halloween special competition on week six, Annabel performed the Tango with her dance partner Johannes Radebe on stage. They danced to the song "Need U Tonight" by INXS and scored a comfortable 29, ensuring their spot in next week's round.
