Charley Webb and Matthew Wolfenden's rocky romance before split rumours
Emmerdale stars Matthew Wolfenden and Charley Webb may have been married for more than five years - but their relationship seems to have hit a major stumbling block.
Rumours have swirled about past unfaithfulness, social media snubbing, and being spotted out in public without wedding rings have left many fans fearing the celebrity couple may have called time on their marriage entirely. Matthew, 43, and Charley, 35, are also proud parents to three children.
While the couple delighted family and friends when they tied-the-knot in a surprise ceremony back in 2018, the relationship seems to have been on a downward spiral more recently. Rumours that their marriage is all but over come at a time where both actors have bowed out of Emmerdale.
Charley played loveable businesswoman Debbie Dingle on the long-running ITV soap from 2002 until 2021. While Matthew has been playing David Metcalfe since 2006 and he will bow out next year. Here is a look at the couple’s rocky relationship away from the TV screen and in real life.
Relationship beginning
Matthew and Charley were brought together by work - with him joining the cast of Emmerdale in 2006, four years after Charley had started playing her iconic role of Debbie Dingle. By 2007, the pair had fallen for each other and began dating - with their romance taking off in 2007.

He recently shared an incredible throwback photo of them from 2008 where they both looked fresh faced and he sported shaggy hair.
Uploading the image to his Instagram grid, Matthew gushed: “I knew as we had this photo taken that we’d be together forever. I’d found my soulmate.” After starting dating in 2007, Matthew popped the question in 2009 - however it would be years before they actually got married.
Surprise marriage
In February 2018, a host of family, friends and famous faces were gathered together by Matthew and Charley under false pretences. They threw a lavish bash, with 100 in attendance, at the extravagant Ripley Castle in North Yorkshire, a Grade I listed 14th-century country house, for a party.
But while guests thought they were turning up to wish Charley many happy returns - in actuality, they were arriving to be witnesses as the couple got married. Speaking to OK! magazine following the nuptials, Matthew gushed: “Our guests thought they were coming to Charley’s 30th party - then we told them it was our wedding!”
He continued: "That moment when we announced what we were doing and seeing everybody’s reaction is the best moment of my life… We couldn’t have had a better response. People just screamed for about ten minutes!”
Growing family
As well as being husband and wife, Matthew and Charley are also a proud mum and dad. The couple share three children together; a son named Buster born in April 2010, a second son named Bowie who was born in December 2015, and a third son named Ace who was born in July 2019.
The pair have allowed fans and social media followers into their family life, frequently sharing updates, photos and videos of their three sons. Charley has also shared her parenting struggles - with many praising her for her down-to-earth approach.
She hit back at criticism last year as some mum-shaming fans questioned her about her son, Ace, and she wrote back: "I love how many messages I've had telling me to get him to tidy one set of toys before he gets out another. Believe me, I've TRIED." While in June last year, she told fans she wanted to have another child with her husband - saying in an online Q&A: "People say you know when you're done having babies. I don't feel that way. I'm actually really broody at the moment but it's just not quite the right time."
Affair rumours
Matthew and Charley’s marriage has been tested over the years - with reports suggesting Matthew hadn’t always been loyal. In 2013, he was embroiled in a cheating scandal.
A fan named Klaire Holloway stepped forward to claim she enjoyed a one-night stand with the soap star when he was 33 and not yet married to Charley. She told the Sun on Sunday at the time: “He was very affectionate but the sex was nothing to write home about. It wasn't very exciting and I got bored.”

Split fears
Reports emerged at the beginning of November 2023 that Matt and Charley had split and were living separate lives. Fans noticed that Matthew ‘unfollowed’ his wife on Instagram - while she had been snapped being out and about without her wedding ring on.
Charley was spotted arriving at the Theatre Royal in Norwich with her hands concealed - but when she did reveal her fingers, her wedding rings were noticeably on her right hand, rather than her left. Meanwhile, sources close to the couple hinted that the marriage had come to an end.
One told The Sun: “Charley and Matthew were in very different places in their lives when they first got together. Three kids later and with new careers in the mix, everything has changed and perhaps they are no longer the unit they once were.”
