Once winter has arrived the frosty mornings will be here too, which means that many of us will be left with the occasionally daunting task of defogging and defrosting our cars in the morning before heading off to work. Not only does that mean that you might have to get up earlier, to ensure that there is enough time to get your car ready before your commute, but also that you have to endure the first freezing cold minutes inside your vehicle before the defrosting is complete.

Many people would agree that your car first thing in the morning can truly feel like the coldest place in the world, but this hack will seriously cut your defrosting time and get rid of any fogginess plaguing your car's windows with ease.

Posted in a video to TikTok, one user broke down exactly how to defrost your car as quickly as possible, and commenters were blown away by how successful it was. The user, @Rugesauto, explained in the short video that you can do this in four easy steps and you start by turning on your defroster - this is the button which looks like a window with three arrows pointing into it. Normally, the windshield is a curved window and the rear window is a rectangular shape.

Then you need to turn the heating system in your car right up, before putting the air conditioner on. It might seem counterintuitive to use the setting that normally works to cool the temperature of the interior of your car, but it also works to dehumidify the air by removing moisture, so combined with your defrost setting it will help get rid of condensation on your windshield and other windows.

The final step is to turn off recirculating air in your car - the symbol for this is a car with an arrow sweeping around underneath itself in a circle. This feature stops air from outside coming inside your vehicle and you would normally use this feature on a very warm summer's day or a heatwave to make the most of your air conditioning.

However, using it while defogging your car means that the air condition can dehumidify as quickly and efficiently as possible, so it will help reduce the time the process takes. Commenters were pleased with how well the hack worked for them, with one writing: "You literally just saved me, thank you!"

Another said, "Holy s**t it actually works!" to which the original poster replied, "No one ever believes me when I say heat and AC, but that's the key!". One user asked if this hack still works if you don't have a working air conditioner system in your car, and the poster replied that if this is the case you should, "try cracking your window, turn defroster on [and] turn off recirculating air," but noted that it will "definitely take longer without AC".
