'I tried Snoop Dogg's Rose wine and it tastes just like Blossom Hill'

I tried Snoop Dogg's Rose wine and immediately did a double take

I tried Snoop's Cali Red not too long ago and was pleasantly surprised by how accessible a red wine it was so when I found out there was now a rose on the market I knew I had to try it. There's no mystery as to where the wine comes from with a name like Cali by Snoop Cali Rose.

This rose has a deep salmon colour that is honestly one of the darkest I've seen in a rose. It's been quite a trend to go for Provence pale of late when picking out a bottle of rose, despite popular belief the colour doesn't actually make a wine sweeter or dryer instead it's more of an indication as to how long the grape skins were involved in the fermentation process.

I wasn't particularly surprised when I raised the wine glass to my nose and could smell candied strawberries. When I was studying my WSET Award in wine I noticed that boiled sweets were one of the strongest notes and something closely associated with White Zinfandel.

It doesn't say on the bottle if this is a White Zinfandel or not, but I would be very surprised if it wasn't one. It's simple on the nose with just candied strawberry and perhaps a little raspberry.

The red cherry flavour isn't overly present on the nose but you can definitely taste it. At 12% it's got a higher alcohol volume than you'd expect from a medium sweet wine, I'd suggest it sits somewhere around off-dry.

For a medium sweet white zinfandel you'd expect to see an ABV more around 9%. This is because sugar in the wine is converted into alcohol, with wines that are higher in alcohol you can expect them to typically be less sweet.

The candied flavour however does make the wine feel sweeter than it is and I do think there's an audience out there that this is perfect for. If you're a fan of Blossom Hill or Barefoot then I think you'd enjoy this.

Roses of this nature are ideal for those who are new to wine and trying to turn away from spirits, it's popular with younger drinkers. Please remember to drink responsibly and only once at the legal age of your country.

I think Snoop's Cali wine range manages to fill a space in the industry for wine drinkers who are new to wine. If you find wines daunting and normally lean to cocktails or spirits and mixers this is a great choice.

I do think fans of a dry wine would struggle with this, especially since the candied note is so strong but I've already recommended it to a friend who mainly drinks rum and is curious about trying more wine. It costs around £10 and you can get it on Ocado or The Bottle Club.
