Harry Potter actress Miriam Margolyes has confessed she is ‘shocked and appalled’ at her own foul language as she has expressed regret over swearing about the politician Jeremy Hunt when she was live on Radio 4.

The 82-year-old actress – who became famous to millions around the world for playing Professor Sprout in the hugely successful Harry Potter film series – is well known for her shocking language and blunt opinions. Back in October last year, Miriam was on BBC Radio 4’s Today program shortly after news broke that 57-year-old Jeremy had been made Chancellor of the Exchequer and was now in charge of the UK’s finances.

Miriam turned the airwaves blue with her opinions about the appointment – unleashing swear words galore while Radio 4 hosts Justin Webb and Martha Kearney were left in a frenzy of embarrassment. It has now been more than a year since the incident and Miriam has expressed her deepest regrets over her bad language. The actress has also hinted that she feels especially bad because she used bad language on a radio show that she personally treasures.

Appearing on The Graham Norton Show, Miriam addressed the incident and confessed she had let herself down. She said: “I would never swear on Radio 4 because to me, it is a temple... I truly didn’t know what I had done.” She added: “I was shocked and appalled at my own rudeness.”

During her October 2022 appearance on the Today show on Radio 4, Miriam explained that she had met Jeremy soon after his appointment as Chancellor of the Exchequer. She recalled: “When I saw him there, I said, ‘You’ve got a hell of a job, best of luck.’ And what I really want to say was, ‘F*** you, bastard.’ But you can’t say that.”

Her comment sparked panic within Today show hosts Justin and Martha who issued hurried apologies. Justin gasped: “Oh no no no, you mustn’t say that. We’ll have to have you out of the studio now.” While Martha added: “We will. With many apologies.”

Miriam’s insult to Jeremy isn’t the only eyebrow raising moment from the past that has resurfaced in the past week – as footage of her interacting with late Friends actor Matthew Perry has also returned to the fore. During another appearance on the Graham Norton show, Miriam was sandwiched on the sofa between Matthew – who died aged 54 last weekend – and British actress Gemma Carterton.

Sharing an anecdote about her encounter with actor Laurence Olivier, Miriam began: ”I used to collect autographs at the stage door and he came out and I remember so distinctly that I started to cream in my knickers. I could feel...” As the audience burst into laughter, Miriam asked Gemma: ”Do you know what I mean?,” who quipped: ”I know exactly what you mean.” Matthew appeared stunned as he said: ”I honestly don’t think I’ve ever been more uncomfortable in my life.”

Mariam also discussed the moment in her recent autobiography – recalling that she regretted this outburst too. She wrote: “Matthew was expecting a bland conversation that stayed on the surface of things, but I was warming to my theme and immediately launched in, burrowing deeper.”

Miriam revealed that she looks back with regret on the fact she asked Matthew “if he was an alcoholic”. She shared: “On reflection, I really wish I hadn’t.” The actress said the episode “was one of the few times” she “didn’t quite ‘mesh’ with another guest” on a chat show.
