Former Open champion Stewart Cink has issued an update on the progress of Tiger Woods, as the 15-time major winner continues to recover from injury.

Woods has not featured on the PGA Tour since the Masters in April, after being forced to pull out of the third round at Augusta National due to an ankle problem. On the back of his withdrawal, the American underwent surgery on the issue in what was yet another fitness set back.

Woods has endured a stop-start run on the PGA Tour since suffering injuries in a car accident in Los Angeles in February 2021, but his latest comeback could well be around the corner after fellow player Cink discussed his recovery.

Cink told Golf Channel: “Mainly I just wanted to know how he’s [Woods] doing. You don’t always get a whole lot out of Tiger Woods, but he said that he started practicing, which I think is a great sign. I don’t know what he’s practicing for, but he said he started practicing.

“So, that means he’s in go-mode for something, and I think we’re all pulling for him to feel as good as he can feel, and if he’s hitting golf balls, I think he’s going in the right direction.” Cink's update is a positive one for golf fans, with Woods clearly targeting a return to competition.

The comeback could come as early as next month, as the 82-time PGA Tour winner takes on hosting duties at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas. The limited, 20-man field for the December event was released last month, but only 19 of the 20 spots on the list were filled.

The vacant place in question was labelled 'TBA tournament exemption' and it is widely expected that this has been left free for tournament host Woods, whose recovery has been ramped up in recent weeks. The American was spotted with a club in hand twice in recent months, first taking to the range at Liberty National in September.

Just weeks later, Woods was back out on the golf course again, this time playing at The Hay at Pebble Beach alongside his son Charlie. This week the 15-time major champion has returned to the PGA Tour circuit, attending this week's World Wide Technology Championship in Mexico.

Woods is on site as course designer, with the event taking place at El Cardonal at Diamante, a setup put together by the TGR design team back in 2014. On Tuesday the 46-year-old was spotted making his way around the course on a golf cart, with his injured leg comfortably propped up against the front of the cart.

Woods was scheduled to balance his Hero World Challenge hosting duties alongside competing last December, but the 2019 Masters champion was once again forced to withdraw just days before the beginning of play, this time due to a problem with his right foot.
