Friends fans 'in tears' over Matthew Perry's special thanks to former co-stars
Hearts around the world broke last weekend as it was announced that Matthew Perry had died at the age of 54. The actor, best known for his role in the hit 90s sitcom Friends, was found dead in his hot tub on October 28.
Many have been mourning his passing since then, with fans of his iconic show even leaving flowers and messages outside the iconic Friends apartment building in New York. They were also waiting with bated breath to hear what Perry's former castmates would have to say about the great loss.
Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, and Matt LeBlanc have since released a joint statement, which read: "We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just cast mates. We are a family. There is so much to say, but right now we're going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss. In time we will say more, as and when we are able. For now, our thoughts and our love are with Matty's family, his friends, and everyone who loved him around the world."
Following this, fans of the show have been looking back at Perry's 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, to learn more about the film and TV star. Just days after his death the book has become the number one seller on Amazon and there's one section in particular that has captured people's attention and left them in tears.
In the final pages of his book, Perry shared messages of thanks to his five fellow Friends actors, and the heartwarming words have proved too much for some to take. The sweet messages have since been shared on Reddit's r/HowYouDoin forum, where fans have been sharing their love for the man who brought Chandler Bing to our screens.
Celeb Bake Off line-up in full - including Friends legend and Little Mix iconPerry wrote: "I closed my eyes, then, and in-haled deeply, and as I opened my eyes, I was surrounded by my Friends friends (without whom I would have starred in something called No Friends).
"Schwimmer, for making us stick together when he could have gone it alone and profited more than all the rest, and deciding we should be a team and getting us a million bucks a week. Lisa Kudrow - no woman has ever made me laugh that much. Courteney Cox - for making America think that someone so beautiful would marry a guy like me. Jenny, for letting me look at that face an extra two seconds every single day.
"Matt Le Blanc, who took the only sort of stock character and turned him into the funniest character on the show. Each of them was still just a phone call away. At the reunion, I was the one who cried more than anyone because I knew what I'd had, and the gratitude I felt then matches the gratitude I feel today."
Thousands of people upvoted the post on Reddit, with hundreds taking the time to comment. One person shared their own message of thanks for Perry, writing: "Matthew Perry, for being the heart of the whole ensemble." Another said: "This is it. This is the post that made me misty-eyed. I tried to reason that these are actors and not a real part of my life in any way in order to deal with the genuine sadness that I felt when I heard Matthew Perry had passed but dammit, I grew up with these people. Watching and rewatching this and many other 90s/00s sitcoms helped me get through many tough times. And to see that they had a genuine bond with each other is both heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. R.I.P. Matthew Perry. Don't worry that your name isn't on the entrance list for the pearly gates. They have you as Ms Chanandler Bong."
Someone else replied: "Oh, here come the waterworks." A different user added: "Such a sweet tribute to his cast mates. I'm glad he got to tell his story."
