I'm A Celeb legend on grim task celebs fake for the cameras every single series

A former I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! legend has revealed there is one gross task the celebs don’t actually do - despite appearing to on camera.

Phil Tufnell was crowned King of the Jungle back in 2003, winning the second ever series of the ITV show. But 20 years on, he has dished the dirt on what the celebs really get up to behind the scenes.

One of the grimmest tasks that every celeb wants to avoid if they can is having to clean out the camp toilet, known as the dunny. Although the star contestants on the show have been seen carrying the dunny, ex-England cricketer Phil says they don’t actually empty it themselves – in reality it is one unlucky crew member who has the “unenviable” job.

Writing in his new memoir, The Tourist, the 57-year-old revealed: “I stuck to the dunny – believe me, an unenviable task. I’d literally have nightmares about it – tripping as I was carrying it away and being consumed by a cascading torrent of celebrity sewage.”

He then went on to add: “A little secret here – the contestants remove the dunny, but they don’t actually empty it. They carry it down to a camouflaged wooden hut, tap on the door and clear off.

"It’s basically an extreme version of that old knock-and-run game, where you wrap a bit of dog muck in newspaper, set it on fire, drop it by someone’s front door, ring the bell and leg it.” The Mirror has approached ITV for further comment on this story.

Phil returned to the jungle earlier this year when he competed in the special I’m A Celebrity All Star series. He managed to get down to the final four, but narrowly missed out on the final which saw Myleene Klass crowned the ultimate Queen of the Jungle, beating former British javelin champion Fatima Whitbread and Diversity star Jordan Banjo.

Speaking of his previous I’m A Celeb success, Phil shared: “I never went in with a game plan and we were all naive back then [in the second series], but it was great to win.” During his time in camp Phil took on three Bushtucker Trials, winning 17 stars for his fellow celebs – which gave him a “buzz”.

He continued: “The trials don’t half make you feel that you are alive. The heart starts pumping and it is good to challenge yourself. I can still remember feeling very proud of myself after I’d completed the trials. You do get a buzz and you’ve got to throw yourself into it all.”

Although Phil didn’t win the All Star series, he made an unlikely new pal – Happy Mondays frontman Shaun Ryder. Calling him an “absolute legend”, he said they “immediately hit it off” and revealed Shaun had since invited him to go on tour with the band, but Phil “might just go for a couple of nights”.

He admitted he even has a nickname for his new bestie – Yoda – after the famous Star Wars character. “He makes me laugh and I think, especially with that stick, he looks like Yoda. You know, the little bloke with the hessian cloak in Star War with the stick and the ears. I reckon he’s going to start levitating soon,” Phil joked.
