Brazilian footballer Felipe Diogo has been shot dead in his hometown in Sao Paulo State.

The 21-year-old striker played for Sao Bernardo FC in Serie C, the third tier of Brazilian football. Nicknamed 'Favela', he came through the systems of Brazilian giants Cruzeiro and Botafogo before finding a home with Sao Bernardo, who are based in Sao Paulo.

According to reports in Brazil, he had returned to his hometown of Ribeirao Preto on holiday when he was gunned down in the street on Tuesday. He was hit by 10 shots from a gunman and later died at the Simioni Emergency Care Unit. The motive for his killing is unknown and the police are still investigating, with forensic officers studying the crime scene.

His club wrote on social media: “The São Bernardo Football Club regrets with great regret the news of the passing of our athlete Felipe Diogo Bernardes Ferreira (Felipe Diogo). May God comfort your family's heart at this time of deep sorrow.”

Vila Virginia, a team from the region where Diogo lived, have also paid tribute to him on social media. “His departure leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew him and admired his talent on the field,” the team wrote. “In this moment of sadness, our thoughts are with Favela’s family, his closest friends and his countless fans.”

A former team-mate of Diogo, Yan Eduardo De Campos, wrote an emotional tribute to his friend on Instagram. “As a player, for sure, he was one of the greatest talents of the 2002 generation that we had in Ribeirao black,” he said.

“You were authentic, but I always warned you about your citizenship training. In order to train, it is necessary to constantly accompany the athlete, providing proper guidance. Need to be present at all times, offer emotional support, encourage study and personal development. There were a lot of people profiting too much and training less. In our last conversation, we talked about this and you agreed.

“Today we say goodbye to our friend Felipe Diogo, the FAVELA. Your departure leaves us with important lessons. May your memory be remembered not only for the jokes and joy you brought to our lives, but also as a constant reminder of the importance of training a complete and responsible player. Rest in peace, dear friend. You will always be remembered with fondness and gratitude.”
