San Francisco 49ers coach gives decisive verdict on trade deadline strategy
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan insists the team’s current form will have no bearing on their plans heading into Tuesday’s trade deadline.
October 31 marks the final day that NFL teams across the league are able to acquire and trade players. As of November 1, all 32 teams will not be able to make any changes to their rosters for the remainder of the 2023 regular season.
The Niners had started the season in perfect style, winning the first five games to move to 5-0 after Week 5. However, the team’s fortunes have changed considerably in recent weeks, which has led to speculation over potential roster moves.

San Francisco’s 31-17 defeat to the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday night in Week 8 was a third straight loss for Shanahan’s team. The Niners now stand at 5-3 thanks to previous defeats at the hands of the Minnesota Vikings and the Cleveland Browns.

Niners quarterback Brock Purdy has been a key player behind the impressive start to the season. However, the quarterback sustained a concussion in the Week 7 loss to the Vikings but was cleared to play against Cincinnati, completing one touchdown pass with two interceptions at Levi’s Stadium.
Sunday’s loss to the Bengals means San Francisco has now fallen to second in the NFC West behind leaders the Seattle Seahawks. Week 9 sees the Niners have a bye week in the NFL, and will not return to the field until Week 10 against the Jacksonville Jaguars on November 12.
With the trade deadline fast approaching, and the Niners’ form deteriorating, Shanahan was quizzed after the loss to the Bengals over potential plans to make changes to the roster. Despite the three straight defeats, the San Francisco head coach remained adamant that there would be no panic setting in when it comes to making trades.
"No, none of this changes anything with the trade deadline," Shanahan told reporters on Sunday, via . "How we played today or how we played these last three weeks.
“I do believe we have the answers in our building. I believe we have good players. I believe we have good coaches. It's up to me to get them to do better.
"I thought we started out pretty good, but there's some things that we haven't been able to hide here these last few weeks and that's why we've got to continue to push them in every aspect because some people do go on these losing streaks and they don't have those answers and you're just living in hope."
