A former 'SNL' writer and comedian has been slammed on social media after he mocked Friends star Matthew Perry's untimely death.

Kevin Brennan, who used to write for the popular Saturday Night Live show, wrote "DROWNED IN A HOT TUB. HAHAHAHA" on X on his, formerly known as Twitter, while sharing the news of the much-loved star's death. He doubled down when TMZ posted about his tweet, adding: "I didn’t mock it. I just thought it was funny. But I do love it when junkies die."

When someone asked why it was funny that the star died in a hot tub, he added: "Because it’s not very deep." The tweets were sent from his account that promotes his podcast.

Brennan is the older sibling of Neal Brennan - though the pair are reported to be estranged by TMZ - who is the co-creator/writer of Chappelle's Show. The tweet racked up a lot of anger from fans of the hit sitcom and Perry, with one person writing: "Never heard of this asshole til tonight Glad not to know him."

Another wrote: "Are you that desperate to try and stay relevant? Until the TMZ article, no one knew who you were. Millions knew & loved w/o hesitation Matthew.

"His past didn’t change that, and it made him stronger. He passed away with more class, & dignity than you could ever hope to have."

A third commented: "He recovered. Hopefully, you can recover too."

"Your career that bad that you have to punch down on the recently deceased? How sad," added one fed-up social media user.

Matthew Perry's sudden death came as a shock not just to his family and friends but to the entertainment world and his legions of fans.

In his final hours, Perry reportedly played pickleball for two hours before heading home to relax. He then sent his personal assistant on an errand, who returned to find him unresponsive. A friend of the star told reporters that he had recently seen Perry looking sober and well. Not long after, Perry's parents and father-in-law were spotted outside his home, which was cordoned off by police.

Perry's 17-year-old neighbor shared what happened next with the US Sun. He said: "They [his siblings] were outside my neighbor's door. "I didn't think much of it at the time until [the] police started arriving and everything. They didn't hammer the door, they kept silent."

"It was very disturbing, and very sad after all those years.. from what he's gone through and his addictions and whatever."

He added: "I saw everything, I feel bad for my younger siblings. I was very sad. At the same time, I did kind of expect it in some sense, but I didn't expect it to be so soon. He'd not lived there long."

Perry was reportedly found unresponsive in his hot tub, with suggestions that he may have suffered a cardiac arrest. Police sources say no drugs were found at the scene and there's no sign of foul play. Prescription drugs were also found.

Perry has been open about his struggles with drug and alcohol addictions over the years. He shared his difficult experiences in his book, Friends, Lovers, and The Big Terrible Thing, where he confessed that he can't watch the show because it reminds him of his tough times.

"I didn't watch the show, and haven't watched the show, because I could go, drinking, opiates, drinking, cocaine. I could tell season by season by how I looked. That's why I don't wanna watch it, because that's what I see."

"I was taking 55 Vicodin a day, I weighed 128 lbs, I was on Friends getting watched by 30 million people - and that's why I can't watch the show, 'cause I was brutally thin'," he said. "I had a rule that I would never drink or do drugs while working."

He further discussed this in a TV interview with Diane Sawyer, which brought him to tears. He revealed that at one point he weighed just 155lbs and that Jennifer Anniston's stern words ultimately "saved his life." He described it as a "scary moment".

The interview also revealed Perry's hospital experiences, including a week in a coma with only a 2% survival chance. Perry shared his addiction struggles to help others facing the same issues.

Just a year before he died, Perry predicted what would cause his death. In his book, which came out in October 2022, he talked about his problems with alcohol and drugs. He wrote: "Not only do I have the disease, but I also have it bad. I have it as bad as you can have it, in fact. It's back-to-the-wall time all the time. It's going to kill me."

Matthew established the Perry House in Malibu, a sober facility for men seeking help.

In a chat with podcaster Tom Power last year, Matthew shared: "When I die, I know people will talk about Friends, Friends, Friends. And I'm glad of that, happy I've done some solid work as an actor, as well as given people multiple chances to make fun of my struggles on the world wide web...But when I die, as far as my so-called accomplishments go, it would be nice if Friends were listed far behind the things I did to try to help other people. I know it won't happen, but it would be nice."
